So, we've been absent for a while now due to me not being very well. But we're finally back on track with doing things with Faolan! We managed to save up some money to invest in a new Alaska cage which arrived this morning!!! As much as I loved the bin cage, it was very fiddly to work out how to add another level and it was cheaper to buy the Alaska cage than to make a new bin cage.

I've added some pictures to show the Alaska cage being built, and in its bare furnishings until we can put all the bedding and stuff in later on! We also have a fun order from Viovet on the way with some new toys which will hopefully be here soon!

Congratulations on your new alaska cage. Its such a good choice. One of my roborovskis is in it and I love the big doors, deep base and the overal size.

I took the plastic shelf/house/ramp out and put a fruit box in (upside down) as a partial extra level.

I am sure your lovely black wolf/hamster will love his new space when he moves in.

Flowerfairy - Yeah, we're going to order some nice wooden shelving that Shannon recommended on one of the other threads in a few weeks/next month just because the shelf doesn't look super sturdy and I heard they can have difficulties getting up the plastic ramp! But I'm so excited for him to be in it. Sadly we're going to have to wait until tomorrow though when our viovet order gets here, as I didn't want to be disturbing him in a new environment to put more new things in!

Yes! All of the viovet toys turned up this morning (picture 1), and then we put the cage together this evening!! After having been a lazy hamster for so long, it was great watching him run around and explore everything. The Alaska cage is amazingg, there's so much room and he's been having a lot of fun with the new toys, although he hasn't quite worked out that a platform exists yet (having led a platformless life thus far).

I managed to get a few pictures of him. He ran straight over and dived into his cardboard tent, ran around to discover the carrot top house which he's been enjoying snacking on, seemed very interested in running through his hanging tube, and eating his mineral flower (I've never had a hamster who enjoys eating the mineral things before!!). He also discovered the joy of climbing the bars (Which he's also never encountered until now!)

I made a bit of an error with the toys though I'm pretty sure the wheel we got is waaaaaay too big because it absolutely dwarfs him, and the sputnik is too small - which means that it's too high up in the cage and we were afraid of him falling out of it.

But other than that he looks so happy!

(Also, the dog in my picture was my chihuahua X, Dexter, who unfortunately passed away at the end of summer last year - hence why we now have Faolan)

It looks great! I'm sure he loves the new toys and his new cage!
The wheel looks good though. My Bernie looks tiny in his huge wheel, but he's able to run comfortably in it

Faolan seemed to have a great time in his new cage last night, although we figured out that he hadn't yet worked out that the platform existed and so hadn't had any water. We taught him to climb the ramp and gave him a peanut for his trouble. He decided to run around like a maniac, unable to work out how to get down with the peanut in his mouth, and eventually dived off the side of the platform... but kept his feet on the platform so he was just comically hanging off the side waving his peanut around.

He also discovered the joys of his vegetable mobile, which he spends a lot of time chasing round in a circle

He looks to be having fun! It looks like the 12" comfort wheel - it's fine - better too big than too small! The 28cm Trixie wheel isn't so huge if you ever have a problem with the wheel and need to change it - that couple of centimetres smaller makes a difference to how it looks, but at least the comfort wheel attaches to the bars! The small sputniks are ok if you put them over a shelf so there isn't a big drop from them. Our cage came with one and yes it's a bit small for a syrian so I use it to put Charlie's veg in and he climbs into it easily as it's only a couple of inches above his shelf. The larger rat sputniks are good for Syrians and I have one of those as well. They look massive when they arrive but don't seem so big once hanging in the cage.

WOW! Love the cage and set up. Great pics! Faolan seems to have taken to his new home. What a lucky ham!
