Re: Please may we present-Jarvis and Mocho...
Should I be concerned?
My little Mocho is still hamstering along. No signs of any real problems. However I realised that I had not weighed him for about 4 months. When he turned 2 he was maintaining his weight. Now, he will be 2 years and 5 months in 2 weeks time. So I know he is very elderly. He still uses his wheel but I guess he does not do any real exercise to maintain his muscle tone. He has now lost about 25gms though that could be gradual over 4 months. He is thinner and I handle him very gently occasionally. He has not lost interest in his food at all. I don't want to unbalance his diet too much as he has to have baby food for his daily meds already. Last night he tucked into the porridge it was in with enthusiasm. He has nuts and veg too. Then HH with linseeds, broken SS biscuits and a little Natures Touch.
Is this just inevitable? Obviously I will keep a much closer eye on his weight because I know weight is a major indicator of health problems.
Any advice or reassurance is welcome.

Re: Please may we present-Jarvis and Mocho...
I know you have no way of telling now but if it has been a gradual loss over the 4 months then I don't think that's really anything to worry about tbh Coco, they do tend to lose weight as the get older so as long as he keeps on eating as well as he has been & doesn't have any sudden weight loss or lose too much overall I think he should be fine.

Re: Please may we present-Jarvis and Mocho...
Thank you cypher. I don't think it has been sudden because I see him almost daily even if I don't handle him. He still moves around well and I have not had to bring everything onto the base level yet. I keep a keen watch out for when that change is needed. He is just obviously thinner when I handle him.

Re: Please may we present-Jarvis and Mocho...
I think it is normal for them to lose a bit of weight when older. Charlie also lost about 25g as he got older. I had already heard that was normal, but it is a bit disconcerting when they feel thinner xxx At two years I gave extras like pecan nuts and hemp seeds which helped him gain a bit again, but at two years five months nothing seemed to give extra weight. It is maybe loss of muscle tone with age?

Archie also lost weight. It's definitely an age thing and also Archie had that bladder infection where he was peeing blood and on antibiotics for 6weeks.
Mocho's still got a good appetite and I went Aww at him eating all his porridge.
Maybe weigh him weekly from now on. Your boy is a little trooper dealing with his illness, the both of you have a special bond.

Thank you Serendipity and TL for the reassurance. I think a weekly weigh in is a good idea. Just to be on the safe side.

Re: Please may we present-Jarvis and Mocho...
I think the weight loss is probably due to age and if it did occur gradually over 4 months then you shouldn't worry. However, I do always weigh my hams weekly because sudden I'd continued weight loss needs to be dealt with. If you find he is maintaining his weight now then he is likely fine. But, if you find that he is losing every week then I'd take him to the vet.

Dear Mocho, would you take on the role of the Ham-Orchestra Conductor? You're smartness & wiseness would be perfect on keeping the other hams in line. XXX Harvey's Mom

Good to hear Mocho is still hamstering on, sorry to hear that he's lost weight though. He's a special gentleham and I hope he's around for a long time yet
