What is going on here??! Look below at the sight that greeted me this morning and is the same now after work. The last photo I posted shows how Mocho had filled up the entrance to his nest. You can spot the start of his green cardboard tube on the left. Now the tube has been pulled/pushed right across the entrance and filled around with Fitch. Must have taken ages! He is not in the tube so I think he has gone in the tube out the back under the water bottle, sharp left around the tube and right into the house. Then he must have back filled. I don't see how he can use the water bottle. Silly Ham! I have a small Classic in reserve so I can put that on the other side near his knawing treat. But still-what is going on or is a ham mind unfathomable??

It's this.

It's obviously something very important though, that's a lot of work!

I believe it to be another prime example of hamster art!

They do enjoy a bit of interior design lol! Who knows what goes on in their little heads or where their ideas come from though!

Lol. Lovely photos of Mocho. He is still building confidence I think - Charlie was incredibly shy for a long time and also used to use things very carefully in his cage. Now he zooms round it, but it took a long time. They do like blocking themselves in to keep the light out. I used to leave Charlie a lot but I read a post somewhere that said you should get them out every day to keep them tame, so I started getting Charlie out every night by tempting him into a tube. He got used to it then. And also got used to being carried through the air in a tube with the ends blocked off by my hands and finding himself somewhere else when he came out! He is probably still a bit cautious after the clean. I do leave Charlie 3 days or so after a clean inside his house as he really doesn't want to come out then and guards his house!

It is funny though when you find they have moved a load of substrate! You could maybe scatter some of his food in the cage around on the substrate which might make him forget hiding, if he gets all excited about foraging.

Thank you for the advice Serendipity. My daughter has also told me that I indulge Mocho too much by not getting him out more. I have gone from being amused to being concerned because I actually haven't seen him since he began to pull up the drawbridge at the weekend. He can be heard eating in his house and I know he is out at night eating etc. but at his regular feeding time he used to come when called and take treats from me even if he was not keen to come out. So I intend to dismantle his defences at feeding time tonight and see if I can coax him out. Then I intend to make sure he comes out most nights if only for 15 minutes or so. I know all are different but if this went on I could not monitor his health or keep him tame.
Do you agree guys or should I just accept he is a reclusive ham?

I think they are all reclusive to some degree, and that they go through different phases at different times. How many days is it since the clean? After 3 or 4 days I would gently move some of the defences to one side and tempt him out into something. You could try putting an arch or something over the doorway to the house, then he won't want to block up the door with substrate. Charlie has substrate piled up over his window to keep the light out, but only does it a little bit in his doorway because the tunnnel makes the house darker.

His second major clean was 2 weeks before this defensiveness started at the weekend. To come out he has climbed up the open large front door or into my hand or into the green tube now blocking his doorway. The house is so large he has something of a Fitch tunnel before his actual nest. He has also blocked up the window with Fitch from outside!
I think the tube will be best to start with. He just won't be a ham demanding out of cage time for a while if ever.
