Decisions to make...
After what seemed like ages, I'll be finally getting my new hamster near christmas and I've decided that it'll be a syrian! My current hamster are dwarves, one campells dwarf and a winter white. What I'm wondering now is about the syrian, which is better to get, LH (long haired) or SH (short haired)? It will be nice if you can give some opinions about your experience with syrians and maybe also a few tips on the gender??
Thanks, DH
P.S. Information on rex syrian will also be useful if you can provide some but since we don't have rex in our area, they are somewhat rare

Re: Decisions to make...
I have had both, personality wise there is no difference relating length of hair, the long hair needs brushing with a tooth brush and it needs checking for matts and tangles, also bedding like wood chips and megazorb will get caught up in the fur, where as with short hairs they don't need the same care and attention in the same way,
also its the testosterone in the males that makes them grow the long coats, where females remain fluffy or don't grow as long as the males, with rex hamsters the whiskers are usually curly or at least wavy and can appear quite comical, while the coat is wavy or tightly curled. It can appear in long or shorthaired hamsters but the curls are "tighter" and more obvious in shorthaired hamsters

Re: Decisions to make...
I've always had the short haired, and over the years have given me plenty of laughs at their antics, their behaviour - how some can be ocd with their home. Nothing wrong with that!
Any type of hamster will bring you joy, laughter and happiness and vice versa!
Good Luck xx

Re: Decisions to make...
It comes down to a person's preferences. Oddly enough, if given a choice, I would never get a long haired since I like my rodents to look like, yanno, real cartoon /pixar rodents . Having said that, I have always gotten long hairs...just who and what was available when I went to get them.
I've never had to brush them....though mine haven't been the ultra hairy /toupee on four legs/hair every which way variety. Just the longhair /butt moustache type...although I think Pook is trying to grow wings?
The odd bit of litter that gets tangled in Pooks fur I do remove, because I like grooming them....but if I don't he will soon enough. Ziggy has never NEEDED a groom at all, but he likes the brush even more than Pook. Pook likes to attack it sometimes and take it from me. He loves to chew and play tug of war with the oddest things.
Kind of odd that although my personal choice would be a shorthair, it just never worked out that way?

Re: Decisions to make...
I think the long haired ones look amazing, but I think I prefer having a short haired one. Charlie's fur is incredibly soft and silky and it's lovely to hold him. I'm sure any hammy will be lovely - pros and cons. I'm intrigued by the description of the Rex Hamster - not heard of that - must go and google it.......

Re: Decisions to make...
Thanks for the replies. I certainly do agree that rex furs look like puffballs but it seemed that most people had short hair. I do have time for grooming of long hairs, but does anyone have any idea what grooming a rex would be like? Or would they need grooming at all?

Re: Decisions to make...
I think it's misleading when people say Syrian longhairs need grooming. While some do, most are like any hamster and spend so much time grooming, cleaning, brushing, washing, and repeating that I've never had to groom them. It's just fun to do so.
I have seen fur explosions that may require a professional beautician, but I didn't own those, lol.....the fur every which way but right kinda long hair. Pooks turning out to be a longer haired one than Ziggy...but its still, as Pook likes to say 'Manageable'
