Thank you Cypher and Boris Pasha. The cardboard castle was the only corrugated cardboard I could find for the floor the other night - and while using pieces for that I realised some bits could slot together to make a house although still had to use glue in a couple of places. It made it easier as I am not good at making things! The door to cut out made it easier as well and it's a good sized door - not so big as to be too exposed but big enough to get in and out and still have food and water next to it.

Fitch is much loved and nothing else would do. It's not that thick but thick enough to nest on/dig down into a bit and pressed down well in the rest of the cage to be a bit firmer.

His cut up hay house makes a little shelf and is familiar and he sat under it for a while before deciding to nest in the cardboard house. The critter campset water bottle holder arrived yesterday but it's a bit useless - it comes with its own bottle and nothing else will fit it. The bottle draws up water like a bath toy - you put it in water and squeeze - and once out I couldn't get it back in again, so stuck to the home-made bottle holder.

Looks good. Having Charlie settled where he can sleep and eat/drink and also have his cuddles. I think he told you in his own little way that he wanted to be there. Glad he`s settled now and you can go forward knowing he`s being loved and pampered. x

Good idea to use the castle for a house. It will be familiar for Charlie.

Thank you RH and CMB. Yes I thought the castle would be nice and familiar too I left a hinged bit on top so I can open the roof. Plus the hay house is familiar (I chopped one side off to make it into a shelf). Yes RH he did seem fed up about going back to his old house after exploring the new one - I just couldn't work out what to do with it. In hindsight it maybe didn't matter if he chewed at the hemp mat - it's supposed to be ok to chew - but I think he just wanted some familiar substrate.

That is a really good set up for Charlie now. If he is happy with it then you will be too. Just enough to do the hamstery basics which is all he needs. Also that bigger side door is better for access. Sure he has settled into a nice nest in his castle house. Great idea there.

Well done Serendipity on Charlie's new set up in the smaller cage, love that you used the castle because he is royalty and deserves luxury and that made me smile.
Glad he likes it.

Thank you Thin Lizzy. I'm just going to bed at this unearthly hour. Charlie didn't eat anything today - all the food I put out was left. I lifted him out again around 11pm and had him sleeping on me. He is very floppy and sleepy. As with the night before he responded to hand feeding and comes round a bit for food. ie he sits on my hand and I hold the food in my other hand for him to eat. So he ate a little bit of banana, then a little bit of cucumber but seems very weak. I stayed up so late because he is so knocked off when sleeping I keep thinking he might be on his way and it's hard to leave him. But I needed to get to bed, so I said to him, what can I do for you, do you want to go to the vet's tomorrow? He woke up at that and started moving and when I took him back to bed and held him in front of the food pots he ate some scrambled egg and quite a lot of licks of baby food. So I can go to bed knowing he doesn't want to go to the vets tomorrow. I keep going through this every day at the moment, he seems like he is on his way then comes round again. He doesn't seem in pain because he is happy to be handled, but was bothered by his toenail getting attached to the blanket - so he can react to discomfort. His fur is still lovely and thick and soft. So I have said night night and we are both off to bed.

I'm sure Charlie will give you a sign if it is time to go to the vet, hopefully he won't have too & will just go to sleep when he's ready, all you can do is take it one day at a time now, he has everything he needs when he needs it, sounds content in an elderly man sort of way & you really can't do more, just cherish those moments with him & try not to worry too much, easier said than done I know.

Thank you Cypher. I do worry of course - every day! I feel like I need permission before taking him to be helped on his way. Otherwise, technically I think I may have, but when he sits up and responds and eats then it tells me he wants to stay here. I think he only eats if I am holding him and have the food in front of him, but he does have some hoard in his nest. He did enjoy the egg and baby food last night.
