Taming Tips
Was just wondering what 'processes' other people use for taming young hamsters?
I've had Biscuit for 2 weeks now and she has started to handle really well. I'm thinking maybe she's ready for the 'next stage', if there is one?

As you can see she is quite happy to crawl up my arm lol she sat in this position for a good few minutes and i was just stroking her.

Re: Taming Tips
What an adorable little girl! She's so pretty, and such a cute name, too!
Well, I suppose you can tame her as much as you like really. It depends on what you want from her, because I'd say if she was at the stage where she's completely happy to sit on you while you pet her then there's not really much else you can do. What is it that you're looking for Biscuit to do?
Good job having her so tame in just two weeks! She must be very friendly and you must be a very good hamster owner!

Re: Taming Tips
Aw thanks Pygmypuff!
I think you are probably right about there not being much else to do in terms of taming. I'm just going to continue handling her each evening and also practice picking her up. That's the only thing I think we need to practice on. Most of the time she just crawls into her ball from her cage and then out onto my lap and my hands from there.

Re: Taming Tips
Glad I could be of help!
Okay, sounds like a good plan. I think the whole taming process is just great fun, and I wish I'd had some skittish hamsters!
Picking up is a hard one. To start with, just try placing your hand into her cage, so she can get used to it. If she comes up for a sniff that's fantastic, if not, place some treats onto your palm and she'll probably hop aboard. In time, she'll learn that hand in cage = treats and cuddles!
Another thing I think is quite fun is teaching your hamster to come when you call her name and she's out on the floor. Puff just recently seems to have picked this up, which is very handy, because when I can hear her chewing something she shouldn't be, I call her name and she'll stop and come running over! I suppose you'd have to teach Biscuit to come by feeding her treats every time you called her name and she came? I'm not quite sure how that would work!

Re: Taming Tips

Re: Taming Tips
Ahahah, oh dear! I didn't actually tame her to do that, so I've no idea why she decides she wants to!
