She's not allowed to be Ham in Boots, my sister gets cross because she is convinced her fluffy cosy boot will eventually get peed in I'll have a dig through the eaves and see if I can find a good prop for Ham in Old Slippers instead though

Don't worry, it was a complete fluke which was not repeated. The laws of the universe remain intact.

Ham In Old Slippers!! Great but perhaps a less attractive proposition for a princess in a castle!

Well she starts off in an old slipper then there's a bit with a fairy God-Rat, a magic Whimzee and some clever tricks and she ends up with a nice pair of sheepskin Uggs.

Ah. Good plot. So long as CC ends up with the best and most expensive sheepskin boots she will feel just fine!

I was actually supposed to visit Sheffield last year to present at a civil engineering conference but I um... quit my PhD just before I was due to go lol I'm still considering whether I want to work in engineering tbh, as many of my graduating class are working in other fields as stayed in and with the PhD having been such an unmitigated disaster I never want to look at another bit of concrete for as long as I live!

What's your discipline? There were always plenty of ladies in our civil/structural department though they were a definite rarity in others.

And Cc's beauty routine is very important and a closely guarded secret, it certainly doesn't involve crawling about under dusty radiators and inside discarded boots (it does).
I am amazed you started a PhD to be honest they are SO lengthy and hard so I wouldn't worry about quitting and how it effects whether you should go into it or not. I must admit most of my friends whatever subject they took at uni most didn't end up doing a related job, I think you have to really want to do it and most people are burnt out by the end. I worked in admin for two years after uni before actually going into engineering. At least you picked the one there were always lots of jobs for

I am a mechanical engineer (my degree had a long title but that's essentially it), as an engineer all my work has been 3D CAD design / drawings orientated whether it was aerospace/railway or marine as I am now. You don't get many ladies in it, I went on an unrelated course recently and their were four female mech engineers on it, everyone at work joked about how all the ones in the country must have been there as there can't be more than five ever. My biggest problem with mechanical engineering is the high levels of Racism and Homophobia and a bit of sexism you get, my current place is good for that actually my department is multicultural and younger than most too so its my first engineering job I haven't got into a massive row with someone for being racist (them not me). I don't know if civil is like that?

I actually am trying to change my career at the moment and become a Jeweller so I wont advise staying with civil or not though I don't doubt I will be taking a pay cut when I change (and my pay isn't massive to start with) but at least I will be working for me not someone else. I am not great at pay negotiation either so maybe that's why mine isn't as high as it could be, my husband is far better at that than me, he demands things that make me wince and tell him to just take the job and he manages to pull it off which is weird being he is an introvert programmer :S

Anyway...

Well whatever she does she has a fantastic coat, she possibly should have own fur-care range and swing her whiskers about on adverts for it lol

I was actually going to say that YOU had picked the engineering with tons of jobs!! lol I guess the grass is always greener! Though the three MechEng guys I would have known best are all out of the country in Germany, New Zealand and Abu Dhabi.

I did some extra curricular stuff with the mechanical department (engineers without borders) and yeah, any girls there were like rare precious flowers! Same with aerospace. I've never had a problem with racism, our department had pretty high levels of students from Brunei due to a transfer program and a lot of our post grads and lecturers are from all over the world but I can see why the academia environment would be really different to the standard office. Don't get me started on the sexism though, we had a huge proportion of women coming into the PhD offices and a few lecturers but once you go any higher its men all the way to the top and some of the things I've heard senior staff members say would make your head explode. (When my friend got pregnant a few month ago her supervisor told her that she was living in sin with her fiancé and it was against God, her body was not hers because it belonged to God, that her fiancé should have "put something on the end of it" and that she had no right to get pregnant before she finished her PhD) Thats actually the one thing that would make me want to stay in engineering, the industry can't afford to lose any women if anything is ever going to change.

I know exactly what you mean about negotiating pay, one of my partners friends is frankly a moron but he has an absolute brass neck and the money he is on right now would sicken you. My partner is ten times the engineer (I am obviously biased but seriously) but he wouldn't have the cheek to ask for more than he thinks he deserves. Money isn't something that's hugely important to me, i don't need an awful lot to be happy and I'm pretty thrifty so I think going your own way into jewellery sounds fabulous! I actually met a jeweller from Belfast at a STEM Networking meeting for those who wanted to go into schools and talk to kids about STEM fields and she was planning on using her 3D CAD experience to get more kids (especially girls) interested in the technology. She has a big beautiful (expensive) store in the centre of Belfast too so clearly the technical head and artistic mind can be a very good combo!

Whoa that was a long post lol

I really wish I had the patience to teach myself photoshop, I have such a vision in my head of Cc in one of those herbal essences adverts in a jungle or under a waterfall!

WHAT?! seriously? wow if anyone had said that to me you would have heard the blast from where you are, and I would probably be in trouble for assault as well :S

My boss gets told off for saying things like "You can't say that there are ladies present", I point out either its appropriate for the workplace or not, there isn't a gender cut off for certain words. He is probably the most PC person I have ever met its weird he doesn't think what he is saying is making there a difference between female and male staff. I actually dislike him saying stuff like that more than the place where they used to call me wench all the time, that was funny.

I understand but you can't let other people dictate how you live your life either.

OMG this would be amazing, especially if you managed to take a photo of her in the middle of doing one of those full body shake things they do, then we could photoshop in some water droplets coming off her too

It's a pretty big nationwide organisation but not quite as big as doctors without borders. They just had a big AGM in Bristol I think that I attended a few years ago, it's mostly focussed on working with kids in schools, sometime research projects in universities and sometimes they can fund sending groups abroad to work on simple engineering solutions for sanitation, energy or housing. We were just setting it up at my university so most of what I did was admin and recruitment but we did raise a good bit of money for the Red Cross after the Haiyan typhoon.

It is funny how some good people still have a weird blind spot when it comes to low level sexism, like my partners father is the worst for just pointing out gender differences in everything, like isn't it terrible how many young women you see smoking these days or with tattoos or how it's wonderful that so many young women stay in jobs after children or how he had a wonderful lady doctor and it's not that they mean anything bad by it but it's patronising as hell sometimes! The "wench" thing must be pretty common, that's the word I got a lot when someone wanted to wind me up. Maybe there's a manual they all read for teasing the office feminist.

Would it be weird to film Cc having a sand bath so I could get some "footage"? It feels like a dreadful invasion of her privacy lol

Just tell her it's for educational purposes. I'm sure many hams out there would love to know how to get their fur so fluffy and beautifully shiny
