Default Bar Chewing

Autumn has come on so far since the last post! I am able to get her out of her cage with no trouble, she loves her ball and has so much energy! She's so cute and I love her to bits She's a completely different hamster from shy and defensive to curious and energetic! I've had her for two weeks now, and I think she's improved so much in a short amount of time.

However, I am very very sleep deprived due to her constantly chewing on her cage, and I worry a hell of a lot that it wakes/annoys my house mates, as well as she might be in danger of hurting herself. Although they haven't said anything, I still worry which isn't healthy for me.

I bought a new cage for her with thicker wire, and this cage seems to make the most noise. She has a modified bin cage, attached to the Maxi Tunnel of Fun and two Super Pods. When I bought her, she was in an aquarium tank, so I guess it's just a natural thing for hamsters to do.

I've researched that wiping olive oil on the cage is a safe product to use to prevent hamsters doing this, but I just wanted to double check this. She has chew toys and a number of hideouts, and a Flying Saucer wheel which I've never seen her use.

I've ordered a larger wheel, and a rainbow bridge in hopes she'd feel less bored or less inclined to chew.

Is it safe for me to cover the bars in a layer of olive oil before I go to bed? Also if nothing works, I am thinking of using the two plastic halves of the Super Pods and joining them together. Would this also be a safe method?

I noticed already that I think one of her teeth has chipped, and I want to stop this habit now before I lose my mind and she hurts herself any further.

Would be grateful for any replies!

This thread should help Managing Bar Chewers
I can't really picture her set up from your description but being sure her cage is big enough, the bigger wheel & lots of toys to keep her occupied might help.

Thank you! That's a great help. I've actually taken away the cage with the bars-she still has enough room, but I will be adding more enrichment items soon!

That sounds good to me, maybe he will be better in one large space without bars.
