What color is Lilly?
I can't figure out just what color Lilly is, any thoughts? She doesn't seem to like me much yet, but didn't have any issues with Hubby (who claims he doesn't like "rodents"). But, no worries. It took Rita, my last Syrian, awhile to get used to everything. I built her a hammy playground w/a bin, but right now, I think she's still a bit nervous to use it. Oh, and Hubby picked out one of those flying saucer wheels for her. Anyone like/dislike these things? Not sure if she's using it, but have seen her on it.

Re: What color is Lilly?
She looks mink banded to me. as for the flying saucer, go for it. It's safer than the meh wheel now (risk of toes/feet getting caught and bumble foot)
Vet cute!

Re: What color is Lilly?
Yup pretty Long Haired Mink Banded. She'll become a more orangish brown with age.
I can't help with the saucer question as I have never used them but I can tell you how to go about making a mesh wheel safe without causing Bumble foot.
Buy industrial strength Duct tape and tape it all the way around the outside of the meshing and then use either very fine sawdust or sand like used in a sand bath to sprinkle the sticky side of the tape so hammy's feet won't be stuck to the tape while running. If taped right there will be no edges of the tape to tempt Hammy to gnaw the tape off and their little footsies can't slip between the meshing and be hurt.

Re: What color is Lilly?
All my dwarfs & chinese have flying saucers, and my Syrian Nimbus has one plus my departed Sirius (Syrian) had one, they all seem to enjoy them, the dwarfs esp, but i see Nimbus have a stroll on his almost every night. All mine also have an upright wheel so they get to choose which they want to run on. unfortunately the wheel you currently have is a mesh wheel that can cause foot problems like bumblefoot, so 12 inch flying saucer for a syrian would be much safer, but if you can get an nice big solid upright wheel either instead of or as well as a flying saucer that would be best. a flying saucer big enough for a syrian (12 inch) is very big and takes up a lot of floor space so you need a large cage to accommodate a 12 inch flying saucer as well as other toys, house and room to move.

Re: What color is Lilly?
Thanks for all the replies. The wire wheel I do have at least has small mesh, so the feet can't fall thru. I went w/that one a while back, as I've tried both the Silent Spinners and Wodent Wheels and was not pleased w/the quality, they did not last very long, especially considering how much they cost! But, the Flying Saucer is now in her main cage. I'll try the duct tape idea for the wire one, which in now in the playground.

The small mesh is still considered unsafe: toes and paws can still get stuck in them, and cause injuries and bumble foot from the uneven surface. The flying saucer is much safer I'm surprised that you were not happy with the Wodent wheel and silent spinner, as those are both perennial favorites for most members here.

Re: What color is Lilly?
Unless the Transoniq company has really changed quality I can't understand why you feel the WW's are inferior quality as I have several here I bought almost 14 years ago and all still work fantastic with no noise at all. My two Silent Spinners both broke at the axles, and I won't begin to say how many Comfort wheels have been destroyed by many months of use. The Comforts always seem to crack right at the spindle where they can not be repaired and still work.

Re: What color is Lilly?
Silent Spinners and Wodent Wheels have always given me problems w/the axles. They just wear out so fast and get wobbly.

Re: What color is Lilly?
Hi BZoo
I have got flying saucers in each of my dwarf fluffs' cages and they love them. They get much more use than the wheels that are in there.

Are you saying Wodent Wheel but meaning Comfort Wheel? The axle in a WW is a solid metal bar which has no moving parts as the plastic fronts and back are what spins around the metal non moving axle.
Now if you don't insert the runner strip fully into a WW back or front that will cause the wheel to appear wobbly and often allows a chewer to destroy the plastic runner. The wobble results from the plastic runner strip not laying firmly in the front panel which makes the wheel wider were the runner is not in the grove fully. Only axle issue I can think of with my WW Jrs is when I didn't place the washer on the front panel and the axle bar broke off the metal circle which causes the wheel to make more noise then usual.
Wasn't the wheel bad was me bad
