Default Tinka's Thread!

Tinka

Hello everyone! My name is Abigail and I'm new here, and this is my first hamster, Tinka!

I got her on Sunday, August 16th. I had been wanting a Syrian hamster for a while, since I get a little lonely in my apartment despite having roommates. I've loved animals and having pets all my life, but I've never had anything small and furry, only cats and dogs, fish, frogs...

Anyways, she's under six months old, and I'm told she is a long-haired Syrian. She does seem a little fluffier than most, but I'm not fully convinced she's a full blown longhair.

She lives in a large tank in my bedroom and eats Oxbow food. She loves running on her wheel, climbing through toilet paper tubes, and chewing on pretty much everything, but especially her carrot toy. She's started exploring my room in her hamster ball, and seems to enjoy it.

So yeah, I'm already in love. C:

Aw! She is so cute! I love the name too c:
I love how she posed for the camera! x3
Hmm, really only male syrian hamsters (long haired) have long skirts of fur near their rump, Females just tend to be fluffier!
I do recommend however to either get a new wheel, or duct tape the mesh wheel!
If she continues to run on it and she scabs herself, it may give her bumblefoot!

But congratulations on the new addition <3 Tell me how taming goes! (or if she already is tame!)

Welcome to the forum Tinka
I agree with the advice about the wheel but that's a lovely photo, she looks a really sweet little girl.

Tinka is a Nordic name that is a variant of the name Celeste. Tinka means "heavenly" but I didn't know this till after I named her. I named her Tinka after my favorite character in one of my all-time favorite movies, All I Wanna Do.

Thanks for the advice! I'll see about taping it first and if that doesn't work I'll get a new one. I already have to get a new bottle holder, since the one I have is metal and she insists on chewing on it and it gave her a little scratch on her face. :C

And taming is going well! I let her just chill out in her cage for two days to adjust to moving to a new home, and then I'd pick her up for a few seconds and then put her back down and would also remove her so I could spot clean her bedding. I've made her little basket house a "no pickup zone" so she knows there's one place she can go where no one will bother her. Hopefully this helps with any stress she may have.

Tinka is gorgeous! Female LH hammies don't get that long skirt/coat that most people think of when they think of LH hammies. They mostly are just fluffier than SH hammies. Welcome to Hamster Central.
