Default New addition

Hi all.
I posted a little over a month ago about my Molly and her struggle and ultimate passing. I just got a new little girl today. She is a white shorthaired Syrian. I named her Sunny. Obviously all hamsters have different personalities and I would never expect Sunny to be the same as Molly, but I am noticing very big differences. Molly lived her house whereas Sunny seems to sleep anywhere. Is this normal? She is only my second hammy I've ever had. Also, could she be depressed I took her from the other hammy in the store? I only took one because I know Syrians do not like to be around other hamsters when they get older. I just don't want Sunny being sad. Lastly, she let's me pet her a little bit. When would be a good time to try and pick her up and handle her? Molly never bit me EVER so I'm afraid Sunny might. Thank you in advance for your advice!!

Hello Katelyn. I am sorry about Molly, but really glad you now have Sunny. Yes, it is perfectly normal for a hammy to sleep outside a cage. My Nutmeg does it all the time. Not to worry . You were right to only have the one hammy in the cage. They don't get lonely. She will get used to her home soon enough. As for when you can start handling her, wait a couple of days and then you can start getting her used to you. I think as long as you are slow and gentle, Sunny shouldn't bite. Most hammies bite because they are frightened. If you have any other questions don''t hesitate to ask. Someone will be sure to have the answer.

I think when we lose a loved ham & get a new one it's natural to worry too much about getting things right & them being happy but I'm sure you're both going to be fine. Just take your time with her & enjoy getting to know her.

Sunny is lovely. I've always wanted a white hammy

Can anyone tell me why my new furbaby makes these weird noses? It sounds like she's snorting or something.

She is beautiful

Some hamsters are more vocal than others but it's hard to really know what it is until hearing it or getting a vet's opinion. One of my females is very vocal and will make noises when she knows I'm in the room until I see her, so Sunny could be doing something similar.
