Thumbs down Heat!!!

Hi everyone (:
I was just wondering what you're all doing for your hamsters on this lovely hot weather to keep them cool!
I move teddy of a morning into a room where the sun doesn't reach and is always cool while I'm at work (this is my little sisters room which ALWAYS has a nice breeze) however I take him back to my room of an evening which can become warm and I've noticed that he doesn't run for very long of an evening anymore (since the heat started)
He is long haired so I wondered if I can cut just some of his fur shorter than usual? And if it'd make a difference (I give him regular trims to stop his bedding becoming tangled)
And also can he have vanilla yogurt? Looking for new cool foods I can give him!
Thankyou
X

you can put a tile in the freezer for a few minutes to get it cold, then put it in their cage they love will to lay on it to cool off, or a mug

I keep the AC at a good temperature but sometimes turn on the ceiling fan on low. I'm not sure how much yogurt a hamster can have, but I'd stick to a non-flavored or Greek one that has less sugar, if yours has a lot of sugar. You can freeze baby food in ice cube trays as a treat.

Not sure where you are from, but it's probably not hotter than where I am. And there's no AC. The heat has slowed both me and hammy down, but it hasn't been anything health threatening.

Unless you count my reactions to some of the odd poses Ziggy falls asleep in on the 'deck ' of his castle. Nowadays, yeah, he has one outing a day and is a total cage potato the rest of the time.

Get natural Greek yogurt. It's got all the healthy bac and enzymes in it, and its a bit more 'solid' than regular yogurt. You can feed it to him fresh and cold out of the container on your finger....assuming you guys have that kind of relationship

Chilled treats of babyfoods also can provide a cold summer treat....just make sure its not a flavor on the DO NOT FEED lists....

I thought of getting him one of those little japanese fans that women in hoops skirts used to use in historical dramas.....but he'd prolly just pee on it.

We're actually cooling down here, but since I have the a/c, it doesn't really matter to the hams. They have Chinchilla stones too if they feel warm.

When all else fails, I remind myself Syrian hamsters are from where I live now. Granted the genetic longhair thing is recent, but as far as the rest of his hamminess, I remind him of this whenever he complains about the heat.

Sometimes I lose my patience though when he keeps muttering 'Some hamsters have airconditioners, because their owners CARE!!' and I ask him how he expects us to pay for this A/C.... with SUNFLOWER SEEDS??

He hasn't come up with a response to that one.

I was out yesterday afternoon & when I got home the sitting room was almost 30C. I keep moving humfry into the dining room (which is on the cool side of the house) at night & bring him back in for playtime in the evenings, otherwise I think he might fry in his bin home!

Skeever & Ziggy - what a double act!! LOL!!
