Default Hammie Has No Common Sense

Does anyone else have a hamster that is like this?

My Syrian hamster has no common sense (as my family and I say). He will be running on my hands, but doesn't stop at the end of my hand. If I don't get my other hand in front of him fast enough, he will do a face-plant onto my legs. Also, I will sometimes let him run around on the couch (while constantly watching him, of course), but he doesn't get that when the couch ends, he shouldn't keep going. He was just going to keep walking (straight off the couch) if I hadn't caught him.

My other hamster doesn't have a problem with this, as she will wait for my other hand to come in front of her before she keeps running, however my Syrian doesn't seem to get it.

I was just wondering if anyone else has hamsters who do this.

I don't believe this is related to common sense, but poor eyesight. Hamsters can only see things well that are very close to them. That puts them at risk for falling off of high places (tables, beds, climbing in cages, etc) and need to be supervised to prevent the falls.

I have noticed that some hamsters will stop and peer over the edges of things and others will do a cartoon run-out-in-the-air-and-fall-straight-down...a la the coyote and the road runner cartoons. Ted E. will stop and so will Almond. Nutmeg...not so much . It does have to with with poor eyesight, as Esmy says. I guess some hammies see a bit better than others. It does mean that we owners have to keep them safe before the silly furries hurt themselves.

My girl Penny readily tries to jump off high spots. Some do seem more cautious than others. If Penny was human, she'd be on roller coasters and sky diving, I just know it. Fearless! lol

Muddle has been known to walk right off the edge of the bed, but when he did it was to continue walking - he just walked straight down the side to let himself onto the floor lol
The rest of our hams are a bit more cautious about the edge of things (and Muddle is perfectly sensible on things he can't walk down...)

I'm fortunate that Ziggy is one who stops and peers. I also spend some time when he's playing sometimes however, to letting him jump onto a pillow from a box or off my hands, so that when he does decide to go COWABUNGA anyways? he doesn't land butter side down

Kind of agility training if you will, since he did escape once, and obviously he jumped at least once. When he used to jump in play time , it was kinda humiliating, so I figured its an exercise that may come in handy....since he will jump small distances anyways. Just glad he can look before leaping in general.

Java is like that, but I think she's quite smart. Persistent to the point of being dumb (she's figured out how to climb her wheel to the top of the 19'' tank, AGAIN, but with no help), but smart.
