Default I rescued...

an 8week old, unwanted, free to a good home syrian

and he needs a name... he's a little nervous; I guess because of his age and his previous owner not having a clue... I mean, who just gets rid of an 8 week old hammy? the poor baby. His previous owner said she got him from a friends litter as a pet for her small child, but they all lost interest when he kept biting them all. That's funny he didn't bite me...and I woke him to get a good look at him!

He's absolutely lovely, and he's mostly black, with some white bits...

I have a really rubbish quality picture of his face... but that's about it.

So far suggested names from my children are:
Benny (cause -apparently- he looks like Benny the cat from Top Cat - although, I don't see the resemblance... )
Badger
or
Shadow...

I'm not sure what he would be classed as but I'm guessing he's a black dom spot? - he has a few tiny patches of white over his body, but he is mostly black all over... he's so sweet and tiny. As he came home in a pet carrier I decided to weigh him quickly before putting him in his new home; he was a teeny 65g!!

Yeh, I have a hammy problem, I know... but I couldn't resist rescuing him. Free to a good home indeed! how people can do it, I just don't know.. don't they realise they're likely to go to snake owners? this little one is safe at least

he looks like a long haired black dom spot to me; similar to my Biscotti.

65g is small, but with proper care you can get his weight up.

I vote Cocoa; it's what we planned on calling Scotti's brother

argh lol, throw in another name to the pot :P lol. 65g is very small, I'm quite worried about his weight to be honest... I dont know if he's long haired - he has no recognisable skirt going on.

What would you suggest to up his weight? I've never had such a tiny syrian before.. his previous owner really didn't look after him huh?

yeh, it was a no brainer honestly. The owner wasn't touching him, she seemed very detached, the kid was nowhere to be seen... and he is so so unbelievably tiny. I mean he looked tiny to begin with but when I got him home and discovered he's a measly 65g I nearly cried. I'm so glad he was nearby enough to get him today.

it could just be poor nutrition. Give him some scrambled egg. I wouldn't be too worried, just give him access to lots of food and he might enjoy some baby food too

Well done sypro87on taking in a rescue Syrian. I also took one in and he also needed feeding up and I gave him baby food alongside his normal dry hamster food which he absolutely loved. In no time at all he put on weight. His favourite was Heinz mum's own recipe vegetable and chicken casserole which comes in a jar.

I would try him for a few days and then weigh him again after a week and if he is not putting on weight or losing weight then have a vet check him over but hopefully he'll come on in leaps and bounds now he's with you.

ok, do I start that asap? I dont want to overload his system with new foods and upset it... last thing he needs is to be poorly.

Would you suggest baby food? I bought some Grampa's sunday lunch today - was going to try Gloria with it I also bought a jar of the creamed pudding - which do you think would be better to try his little tummy with?
And how often should I offer it to him to help him gain weight?

thankyou Amie, I plan to take him to see the vet nurse Gloria saw when I wanted reassurance about her teeth - he was really fab. If he doesn't gain weight soon he'll definitely be going to see the nurse.
I got baby food today for my other hams, just as an occasional tasty treat - i plan to freeze it in ice cube trays

I sure hope he does come on leaps and bounds

He's a very lucky ham to have been rescued & I am sure he has every chance of thriving in your care. What a sweet little thing! Why are people so unkind to animals? Treating them like disposable toys. It's time there was some sort of system that would not let people keep pets unless they could prove they were going to have a decent home & care.

a name? Sooty?
