Default Charlie Chinchilla Sand

Hi Everyone,

i was thinking about trying something different as a substrate for my Long Haired Cream Satin.

Does anyone think that Charlie Chinchilla Sand would be suitable for him to live on?

I am currently using wood based Cat litter, but all he keeps doing to it is making it all into a fine powder!! I dont know if he is doing it with his teeth or with his paws when digging, but it is all being gound into a powder!

Kind Regards,

Tammy x

I've just moved all my LHs on to Finacard and I can definitely recommend it! Its fab!

My only concern with Charlie Chinchilla would be the mess. My dwarfies get it EVERYWHERE and that's just from a smallish dish....I'd hate to imagine what mess a Syrian could make with a whole cage full!

I think it'll be cheaper to use somethig like finacard unless you buy chin sand in bulk. this is what I have ordered before and I think it's a good price:

Okay, here's photo of a Gabber with Finacard being kindly modelled by Woody Dubeanie:

And this is a "normal" Gabber showing the size sand bath my dwarfies use - and they manage to get everywhere...I spend forever wiping the sides and top of the Gabber (and the one above it on the shelves) to remove the dust.

I'd definitely go with Finacard (or Megazorb/Auboise) rather than sand...unless you like dusting??!

Thanks so much Justine,

those pics are great

I think i might try out the chinchilla sand and see if he makes a mess with it, but i will probably end up switching to Finacard or megasorb - think that is the spelling, what is that like for long haired?

Thanks again,

Tammy x

Megazorb is pretty good (its definitely z, not s) for long hair too....I prefer Finacard because you can buy it in mini-bale size whereas Megazorb comes in 85 litre sacks and I personally just don't have the space to store it.

I've used chinchilla sand for my LH cream satin boy before, and, especially during the summer he seemed to enjoy it, as it remained cool, so you would often see him 'lying on the beach' It was easy to clean out the wet corner and certainly never got caught in his coat.
the issues I had were the weight of the cage with the sand in, and when trying to give him fresh food (I had memories of my Mum feeding me ham sandwiches on the beach and crunching on the sand - yuck).

I've found megazorb is not great for long haired hams, to be honest, and much prefer finacard!

megazorb was a nightmare for Harvey. I constantly had to pull pieces of megazorb out of his hair that were in knots, and usually hair came with it. ouch! i use finacard for him now... although he actually has no skirt any more.
