Growling?

My sister was over yesterday and she wanted to hold my animals. Well I haven't really handled Matthias much yet , he seems a little ornery still, but she wanted to give it a whirl. So all she did was put her hand in the cage and his lip starts to quiver. So I told her to offer him a treat, banana chip his favorite, but he tries to hit it away. Finally he starts growling or something at her

This hamster is so much different than any other hamster I've ever had.

Quite strange, well I guess it just didn't want to be bothered, we need to respect their wishes so as to not become a bad experience to them. Was your hamster sleeping prior to your sister trying to offer treats and handling? Maybe Matthias was just sleepy?

Oh he doesn't sound like a very happy chappie - has she tried holding him since - was he just in a grumpy mood that day. Any behaviour such as this is an indication to shut the door and leave the hamster alone for a while and maybe try again later in the day/evening. They clearly are not in the mood to play

That is weird, it does however sound like he needs more taming since you said he is quite ornery, maybe bringing him out of his cage and then picking him up may be a better idea as he could just be very territorial of his cage.

This is actually very common with hamsters, especially dwarf hamsters. How has he been since? How is he with you?

could it be something other than growling? I have never heard of a hamster growling before! Our girl, when she doesn't want to be bothered, will "chitter" her teeth, and come towards you (very persuasive to leave her alone).....but no growling.
