Do Syrians need a sand bath?
I intended to buy some chinchilla sand for my syrian, but am having second thoughts now having read some online sites say that syrians don`t need them? I know some people give their syrians sand baths, but do they really require sand to bathe in? Just wanted to know before I went spending money on sand that might just be ignored or used as a potty!
My dwarf hamsters in the past loved their sand baths, but with a syrian, I was`nt convinced having read what others said about syrians not needing sand.

Re: Do Syrians need a sand bath?
They don't need it like dwarves do, play sand would do the job just as well, since they mainly just enjoy digging in it I think (or peeing in it..)

Re: Do Syrians need a sand bath?
some syrians might have a little roll but tbh its dwarfs who love them ^.^
mimi enjoys her sand bath by digging in it and ending up kicking all the sand out, then she goes out and kicks all the woodhsavings back in
i use it mainly for a toilet

Re: Do Syrians need a sand bath?
I have given sandbaths to all my syrians at somepoint and they all just ignore them or use them as a toilet.

Re: Do Syrians need a sand bath?
Thanks for your input guys. I don`t think I`ll bother now because it`s probably a useless excerise! I`ll spend the money on something else for him instead. My dwarfies loved their sand, but I was`nt sure about syrians so I`m glad I asked before I bought it. Thanks. x

Cooper loves sand, he digs in it and occasionally rolls in it too.

Re: Do Syrians need a sand bath?
It does seem that some syrians love it and some don`t! I would try some with Boris but I don`t really want to buy a carton of sand and have to throw it away if he does`nt bother with it. His previous home never gave him any and he`s about eight months old now, so I`m not sure he would miss it really if he`s never had it before. Obviously if I feel his coat is ever in need of a brush up, I might just buy some and pop it and and see how things go. But if it`s not a necessity as it is with dwarf hamsters, I`ll leave it be for now.

Re: Do Syrians need a sand bath?
I would try some! Ask at a pet shop if they have any bags f chinchilla sand, my local pet shop sells sand in bags of however much you want can it is £1 per kg Ruby loves to dig about in a tub if it and will sometimes roll in it and shake about! She also uses it as a toilet but will not dig in that bit
