yes it abit downy, it's sort of browny-grey. he's dark brown in winter with just an orangey head, but in summer he looses the brown and goes orange all over. someone on another forum suggested he maybe an umbrous golden?

Yes he does sound like an umbrous golden. Satins are very shiney and not the matt way that normal coats looks. There are some examples here

Anyway, I was unaware that there were so many different color types of syrian hamsters!! That is a really cool article...
