The world of showing is very addictive Holly. I innocently stumbled into breeding and exhibiting Netherland Dwarf rabbits and had 6 years which felt like a roller coaster ride. I eventually gave up due to work committments. I could easily be tempted into the Hamster show world, although I am resisting. But - I'm going to go and have a look at Cardiff...

No Holly Dove can only go in the non standard class. It is not one of the standard recognised colour which has a written standard in any of the hamster associations. Mink is the same. At a show there will be classes for set colours which are standard eg, cream, white, yellow, cinnamon and all the rest go in 'any other colour' but it has to be one of the standard colours eg dark grey, silver grey, honey etc. There will also be standard longhaired colours but normally all the satins go in one class regardless of colour. Look at a show schedule and you will see. When you join a club you will get a handbook containing all the standards and how the should ideally look.

We might go there too (and how's Sybil doing? )

It is beginning to make a little more sense though it's obviously a complex subject - I'm hoping once I've been to Lymm and spent the day taking it all in that I'll at least have a much greater appreciation of all the colours and standards.

I've got an application form for the Northern Hamster Club as I think I'll make it to more of their shows but was planning on joining on the day.

Well I still love the Dove (I'm now pretty certain that's what she is) but I know I'll be best waiting - I've been trying to convince a friend who's daughter is desperate for a hamster that she'd be perfect for them!
