Oh no Serendipity, not again, especially when you have been so careful and particular after the last outbreak.
How is it in the NE today? The rain in London has been almost non stop and if this had fallen as snow then nothing would be moving.

That sounds like a completely nightmare, Serendipity. Especially when you've been so careful.

How's it going Serendipity?

I've fully cleaned but didn't disinfect as no need and closely inspected Rodney's cage today but couldn't see any traces of moths.

I do know that pantry moths are in the house because i have seen and swatted two upstairs. Thing is, it's not unusual to see something fluttering about now and then but i've never really paid much attention to it. The lack of house spiders this year didn't help though.

My action plan:

Rory is going to move into the Alaska tomorrow and i'll check the other three upstairs.

Tonight i'll order some petsafe moths catchers to hang up near the lights.

I've put more hamster herbs in their habitats because moths don't like the smell of herbs.

Check dry foods and do more cleaning with lavender Zoflora because they don't like the scent of lavender.

Use wax scent burners in rooms the hamsters don't get into.

Do more vacuuming including cobwebs.

Wash curtains and windows which is long overdue.

Quit work and encourage hamsters to eat anything that moves.

In short, make a moths life as miserable as possible.

Lol. Yes I will do the extremely tedious job of cleaning out my food cupboards tomorrow and wiping down packets. Most dried foods are in lock and lock boxes (after last time) but I got lax and have loads of half open packets of cornflour, icing sugar etc. The fact there was a drowned moth just below the food cupboard means it could well have lays eggs in there first.

Maybe try and identify your moths - they might be some other type. The telltale sign of the food moths is when they saunter into the hamster cage as if it’s home (which it is!).

They are definitely a moth but light brown and not two tone like the food moth. They flutter around the light and they're dead now. A gecko or two would be handy.

Just wanted to thank you all! The moral support means I can now face cleaning out the kitchen cupboards. I hate housework at the best of times!

Its like dark sand? Orangey and some darker brown, I find lots in plastic tubs so when you bang it and it falls to a corner could be mistaken for sand. I assume it can be dormant or they lay so many as more dont hatch?

My offenders were tinea pellionella and white shouldered moth

*shivers*

I think I'll be boil washing into my retirement! As I think I got everything ill find a box or something with the dust or an empty case

blerggj!! Good luck!
