Default Guinea pig bite

Hey everyone, so this summer I got a guinea pig and had her for a month before she started biting me for no reason. I've asked pet store workers and many other people yet no one seemed to understand. She did it once and I left her alone a while then she bit and bit and bit. It was aggressive biting and I had to wear gloves to pick her up or to give her food. She never seemed to sleep. I stayed up really late and even with the house completely quiet, she wouldn't sleep. Then at sone point she just lay down in her cage and she would stay there. She barely ate and whenever I would take something out of her cage or put aomething in her cage, she would bite so I had to wear gloves. Eventually she passed but to this day I'm still questioning what she had.

Did she live alone or did you have another guinea pig? Guinea pigs are very social and need to live in pairs or groups. I don't know if it's the case with guinea pigs in particular, but in general loneliness in social rodents often displays as aggression and fearfulness and in extreme cases, depression, loss of appetite etc.

It is also likely that she had something wrong with her that caused her pain and loss of appetite. Pain can cause an otherwise friendly animal to bite. You could join The Guinea Pig Forum for more expert opinions but guinea pigs can have so many things wrong with them, it's probably impossible to pinpoint exactly what it was now.

She lived alone because I never had a guinea pig before so didn't know much about them but we think she had some sort of stomach problem. I have heard guinea pigs can have many different stomach problems. I definetly will make sure to The Guinea Pig Forum. Thankd

Sorry about your guinea pig.
If you get guinea pigs again, I highly recommend checking out the youtube channels Scotty's Animals and LA Guinea Pig Rescue. Font of information and really nice and helpful too. Saskia from the LA Guinea Pig rescue also set up a facbook group.

I had a guinea pig in the 70's who lived alone because neither my parents or i knew that they should be kept in pairs.

He was fine and happy but very fixated on my mother who spoilt him rotten and spent a lot of time with him. He lived in the kitchen and had the lounge to free roam in.

One day he became aggressive and bit my mother so we knew that he had taken ill.
The vet did various tests and diagnosed a brain tumor. He tried painkillers but Mops was still in pain so was put to sleep.

We all live and learn and next time you decide to get a piggy you will have done your research, get a bonded pair and take them to the vet when you suspect them to be unwell.

I never thought she might have a brain tumor. I will make sure to get 2 when planning on adopting some.

Hi, sorry to hear about your piggie. She could've been depressed as she was on her own. They shut down, get upset and can stop eating.

Pigs need to eat essentially all the time to keep their gut moving, if they stop, so does their gut (GI Stasis) which can cause bloating and is very painful. Piggies don't sleep like we think.

They have quick naps because of the fact they're prey animals so need to keep watch for predators.

Also, if you got her from a pet shop, it's likely she was bred for money and not for health. Which is very sad but a reality.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Have comfort knowing that you did your best considering.

Of you do want to get piggies in the future, feel free to ask me any questions, if I don't know then we will learn together.

I agree she could have been in pain - a vet check could rule things out if it happens again. And they do need to live in groups - 2 or 3 at least usually.
