I've found out that they aren't 8 weeks old like the breeder said, but maybe as young as 3 weeks according to licensed breeders and show persons on Facebook pages. They're meant to be 3 times the size. So this is going to be a challenge

I thought they looked young, but I'm not familiar with how rats look at different ages. Hopefully they're eating and drinking ok? It was quite bad of the breeder to mislead you on their age.

Tbh I didn't know either as my rats have all been fully grown when I got them. They're eating like pigs and doing well.
I've been in contact with isamu rats. She's one of the most respected and highly knowledgeable breeders within the UK in the fancy rat world. Bless her she's taken the time to talk to me to help guide me through this part of their life. Foods for protein and various supplements to ensure they don't miss out on vital nutrients they need in order to grow and survive. I'm so grateful to her for taking the time to talk to me over the past couple of days.
She has a wealth of info on her website and she also has a YouTube channel worth checking out

What have you done to me! lol
I have been binge watching Isamu Rats for the last 3 days, she and her rattles are just amazing.
So sad you little ones don’t have their mum while that are still so young but I know you will do your best for them.
Please keep telling us about them... my next hamster may end up being 3 rats lol

I'm going to say mice, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, or anything related. I have two mice. They make great pets!

Contemplated having mice as there's a mousery near by, but the people in the house weren't happy with the idea. I've had rats before so they know about them. Obviously them being quite large, cages are basically escape proof in their eyes. It's ok though. Rats have my heart. Have you got 2 females? What are they called?
I ended up with rats

I had 3 rats first time around and for a first timer, it was a challenge! Much was with 2. You can always expand your mischief later on. I'm not saying don't do it, just that I did that and found it tricky and they were adults.
Isamu rats is amazing. Need to binge watch more vids. Yes they should have their mum. I'm trying my best to be the next best thing.
If there's anything else you would like to know please say.
They have had 3 taming sessions. They had 2 days break because of the heat. Today they had their third taming session and it went well. Inky is getting more confident which is great. Before she'd just hide and stay there. Today, not only did she come up to say hi, she climbed all over me
Splat has been a confident little one since day dot. They've been moved into the savic plaza as it has the large door and Splat will come up to the door to me and take food from my hand.
They're still not sure on being picked up but I think that'll take a few weeks. Must be a strange feeling.
I weighed them yesterday as it marked a week that they've been here. Inky was 54g and yesterday she weighed 76g! Splat was 55g and yesterday weighed 69g! At this particular moment in time I'm not trying to get them to the weight of a kitten their age, I'm just trying to get the weight going in the right direction and make sure they maintain body condition.
Since being here they have already filled out somewhat. They were quite fragile and boney and now they've got a nice layer of muscle/fat over their ribs, spine and hips.

Re: I have done a thing
Thought I'd share some pictures of today's session.
Also the food I'm mixing to ensure they are getting everything they need to grow and develop. I've introduced a wet meal today. They really like wet cat food. Fish based dog/cat food is best as it's generally easier to digest and kinder on the kidneys which is a weak point on rats.
Please excuse the mess in the bowl. They enjoy the mix of baby food and mixed veggies. Poop means it's 'safe' (thanks splat). Last photo is what it's really like to own rats, especially babies. Must explore. Never stop moving. I'm just lucky they were going the same direction

Re: I have done a thing
Update.
Yesterday marked 3 weeks of the rats being home and OMG have they grown! They're roughly 6-7 weeks now and nice and solid.
Splat is super tame and confident and will popcorn around the cage when she sees me. Never seen a rat so happy. Inky also popcorns but not to the same extent. She too likes my company. Not as comfortable in the open though but that will come.
Time for an upgrade soon. Settled on the savic empire zeno 3. I'm going to stack it on top of the savic plaza which they're currently in.
Also going to upgrade their 11" wheel to a 14"-16" wheel.
Splat now weighs 123g and Inky 135g! They're doing well
https://youtu.be/bseOelEZMsw
It's wet cat food mixed with spirulina in the bowl. High in protein so perfect for this stage of their lives.

Re: I have done a thing
They are beautiful little creatures. Do they run away when you let them out of their cage or do you put them in a playpen? I can imagine that they are a lot faster and agile than hamsters. Are rats more active during the day or night?

Yep, they are both females! Vanilla and Snowflake are my two albino mice. I hope you enjoy your rats. I hear they make great pets as well.
