They're lucky to be here to be honest. I thought I'd lose them by now. They were so malnourished and weedy I didn't think they'd make it this far.

I am going to invest in a very large playpen. At the moment they go on my bed for free roaming. Smaller space and forces them to interact with me, thus helps with taming.

As soon as I sit by the door Splat (all black) will be by the door and will jump out and sit on my lap and enjoys the attention.

Inky will come up to me but prefers to go in my pocket, sleeve or snuggle sack. She's not a massive fan of open spaces.

Oh yes much faster and agile than hamsters. When splats excited she can do a lap of the cage, just jumping on the bars, faster than you can blink.

They can be active during the day and night. Girls are usually more active than boys and you can hear them at night playing, running on the wheel and digging.

They do make great pets! They're like tiny dogs. Splat and Inky are my 6th and 7th rats

UPDATE

As the rats are 7-8 weeks old now and solid. They've quickly outgrown their 'kitten cage' and have been upgraded to a more grown up cage. I still need to add in a few more climbing toys for them but they've got a lot to do.

I'll be adding their weights tomorrow. Hopefully they'll be around the 150g mark.

a good show quality Berkie will have a head spot but it isn't required. Inky appears to have a mismarked blaze

Your other ratty picture at the start, the upside down triangle is badger

At the start? The one in the sputnik you mean? Damon. Thought he was a hooded. Let me find a different photo of him

I know berkshires have a head spot, didn't know they could be without. Did think Essex for Inky but I'll have a look at mismarked blaze

Thought I'd update everyone on my squish beans, Inky and Splat. Remember them tiny kittens? They're roughly 9-10 weeks old. Here's them now!

Both beautiful lads

Damon deff isn't hooded. Hooded is like the name suggests, like a whole colour covering the head and then (ideally) the colour extends down the back in a stripe (can be broken in many poor examples). That triangle marking on his face is badger if the rest of his body was a solid colour but now I can see the rest I'd say he's a (colour standard wise speaking) a poor variegated

https://www.nfrs.org/varieties_marked.html

Essex has a head spot yes but it also dilutes the colour too mkaking like a faded effect so black essex rats appear a faded black, grey, white mixture (one of my fave boys was black essex) The colour fades down into their white belly, very distinctive

black essex rat.jpg

A head spot is just that, a tiny little patch in between the eyes. Inky's marking extends across the whole face in a block but as it is "wonky" it is a mismarked blaze ( a blaze usually is like a stripe down the middle). It looks like he has a white full belly, socks and a dipped tail so that would be berkshire

You also said Splat is berkie... he seems to be all black to me?? If he has white markings on his belly but not the whole belly, that isn't berkie (see the markings link above). I can't see any little white "socks" on him either or tail markings which would suggest a berkie.

Not that any of it matters! It only matters if you plan to show them and want to see how they compare to the standard

Ah I see what you mean. Splat is just a Dumbo black self. It's more Inkys that had me baffled. All out of curiosity, makes no difference to me lol.
