Giant African Land Snails
Hi everyone! I have recently set up an enclosure and my Giant african land snails should be arriving any day now! If anyone's interested in the species, one is an Archachatina Marginata Ovum (Nigerian and Leucistic), and the other is an Achatina Achatina (also from Nigeria and Albino).
I'll be updating once they arrive but they will be quite small as they are both babies

I'd be interested in seeing pictures of your enclosure (and the snails when they arrive). I've looked into Giant African Land Snails in the past, but I don't think I have the space for them right now.

As they are only babies at the moment, their first enclosure will be an exo terra faunarium, however it will be upgraded once they are bigger. I've heard that bin cages without mesh and just drilled holes are good too .

How could you watch them in a bin cage though or can you take them out of their habitats once they are bigger? Is it possible to interact with Giant Snails?
I obviously know nothing at all about them.

From the research i've done you can handle them as long as your hands are wet and you have nothing like moisturisers and soap that can be absorbed by them. I've seen people handle them by holding them on things like leafs of lettuce to avoid skin contact, but as long as there's nothing harmful it should be fine! I think you can interact with them at any size, but I'm assuming the smaller ones may be slightly scared to begin with. I much prefer the plastic/glass terrariums but bin cages are an option, It will just be harder to see in I assume.

Re: Giant African Land Snails
GALs and honestly probably all snails actually like to be interacted with most of the time. Snails born in captivity are more likely to be comfortable with people though obviously. A lot of them even like to be pet! They're honestly like most other pets in a lot of ways- they have their own funky little personalities.
I keep several cepaea nemoralis I found outside because sadly here in Canada GALs are illegal. I've actually raised a few babies from the original ones too. One of them I've named Tomato and they're super friendly. They like to crawl on me whenever they can and bump into my fingers until I pet them. I found them in a garden with a heavily damaged shell and nursed them back to health so I think they recognize that I'm not dangerous <3.

That's such a nice story I used to be grossed out by snails but my little sister brought me around lol, her snail is the Achatina Achatina. Both of our snails are captive bred (I made sure) I think one of them is first generation and the other is second or third.

Re: Giant African Land Snails
Hey corbeens. I've been keeping gals on and off for 15 years. Currently have Marge (a marginata, not ovum) and Powder (an albino fulica). Mine are adult now but I raised Marge from a baby. They definitely have different personalities and like being handled and petted. Marge also like to escape and explore.
How are your little ones doing?
