What a cutie. I hope he enjoys his new home.

With gerbils there is the advantage that they can safely be handled much sooner than hamsters as well.
That does seem to be the case! They were such fun pets, I used to love giving them a whole piece of paper and they would go mad chewing it up and making a nest! It's great that they are so social too, not like our hammies!

dalis_mum, how is your gerbil Ziggy doing?

Since I last posted in this thread I've adopted two new gerbils. Storm (grey with white belly) and Rocket (black) are a neutered male and female pair from a local rescue. Storm was found abandoned in a box and Rocket fell out with her sisters and her owner couldn't keep her. The rescue had Storm neutered and introduced him to Rocket.

Those are beautiful Sushi. I'm especially jealous of rockets little fingerless gloves look.

Ziggy is a happy little man. Digging, chewing and playing in his sand bath. He doesn't have any interest in his wheel though. I have to dust it. Lol. I recently moved all my animals into the living room where it's cooler and he seems to like the extra activity out and about. Can I ask what cage you use for your gerbils,?

Wheels can be a bit hit or miss with gerbils. They have a hopping kind of gait which doesn't seem to work with the larger, heavier wheels, but the smaller wheels can be uncomfortable for them.

My new pair are in a Kerry terrarium and my females Lily and Daisy are in a 120cm tank from Junglepets.

I've not had a gerbil for a few years so I am trying to do research but cannot find a n answer to the wheel issue.
Have you seen Tic Tac Wheels, Iíve not tried one but I know they are well liked by rat owners, they do various sizes, not cheap but look indestructible

It's not that he chews. He has a plastic one that just sits in his cage collecting dust. I've tried 8 and 12 inch to the same outcome. Ziggy is just not interested. He gets plenty of time in his pen and handled. He just doesn't want to run.

That's quite normal for a gerbil. They don't run for miles like hamsters in the wild so that instinct just isn't there. A wheel is just another toy for them. Too much time on a wheel isn't very healthy for them anyway - some gerbils get a bit obsessed with wheels and spend hours on them and then get depressed when they're removed.

Very true, sushi. I just wish he would get more exercise. He's become a little rotund, and being bigger than the average gerbil, I'm concerned he's starting to look like a degu.
