Cage Stand Crisis
I want to get some opinions on keeping a glass tank enclosure on a certain piece of furniture.
The enclosure is basically a 40 breeder tank(roughly 3 ft x 1.5 ft, weighing around 44 pounds) and the furniture is the Target equivalent of the Ikea Kallax 4 cube unit except with a higher weight capacity and it happens to be slightly different in size but regardless the weight capacity for that is 55 pounds for the top shelf area alone. The chances of somehow going above that capacity with everything added to the enclosure are basically nonexistent.
Just going by the weight it should be fine, but does anyone think it would be an issue to have around 3 inches of overhang in length on each side and around 1.7 inches of overhang in width?

Re: Cage Stand Crisis
I would say it entirely depends on the tank construction. Different tanks are made from different thicknesses of glass. The thinner the glass the less able to handle any overhang, especially if knocked. Also, the thickness of the glass adds weight and increases pressure on the bottom if not supported fully. Personally I would buy a piece of wood to go between the tank and furniture that will cover the whole length, and create a small lip around the tank. This would more evenly distribute the weight and prevent the risk of pressure cracks in the base of the tank.
I use these for holding all my tanks. I have them in black and with the black trims of all my habitats it looks rather smart. They also hold up to the weight of my considerable text book collection. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Capacity-Ga...ef_=ast_bbp_dp . I appreciate they're not everyone's cup of tea but there's definitely no weight concerns.

Re: Cage Stand Crisis
Just to clarify it's not a fish tank, nor is it designed to hold any significant water volume which would drastically increase the weight and is generally why it seems most people in the aquarium community are sometimes very against tanks overhanging on stands. I personally don't think this necessarily applies since it definitely won't be holding any water which means the only added weight is going to be bedding, toys, etc. Nothing that heavy, and certainly below the maximum weight for the furniture in question.
With that in mind, I'm no longer all that worried at this point on the furniture itself and putting the enclosure on it. I would've been quite a bit more worried keeping an actual aquarium on that furniture though and for very good reason knowing just how heavy water is even in smaller aquariums!
Also looking at a lot of Detolf setups it seems like most people keep those on a larger Kallax unit where they also overhang, and I think it would be similar to that except on a smaller scale. Of course not everyone agrees that it's a good idea to have overhanging Detolf cages, but it certainly happens.
