Default My Harvest Mice

I love harvies, and was a long time without any despite searching. On the way back from January's show in Doncaster I stopped off and collected a pair. Heather and Bracken are my first mixed sex pair of harvies.

It's fun to decorate a viv for a species that keeps its enrichment tidy. Recently I've had duprasi in the vivs and they just looked like a cardboard recycling centre!

I was warned a pair was unlikely to have pups as they mate competitively, but Heather and Bracken obviously haven't been on Google They had a litter of 6 adorable pups 3 weeks ago and Heather has another litter in the nest.

When the new pups are old enough, I'll split the boys and girls into separate vivs. Therefore I've been shopping for new viv decor. There's still more to arrive for the garden viv, but it's taking shape nicely.

And here's one of the pups from the first litter

Oh they sound such a sweet family! Heather, Bracken and loads of babies. Harvest Mice are so sweet looking. Is that the same as a field mouse? The Viv looks amazing. Things to climb and forage and places to go.

They’re so sweet, when I was a kid our farm had loads of wild harvest mice! Sometimes they’d find their way into our house tho and trying to catch them was not fun lol

I never knew you could keep them as pets though, are they different to keeping regular pet mice? I’m guessing that behaviour/tameness wise they’re like the robos of mice lol

Yes! They are very agile and awesome climbers. Their tail is prehensile and they use it to hold onto things.

Field mice are different

Yes. Harvest mice are much smaller - only 5g, rather than 30-40g of a fancy mouse. Also they are less prone to cancer and respiratory issues. They are a little more temperamental to keep in groups than fancy mice though (well, girl fancy mice. Boy harvies are better than boy fancy mice).

I love having the babies! It's been fascinating to see how fast they developed. They were out of the nest, eyes open and climbing, allbeit a little wobbly, at 9 days old!

Harvies aren't smelly They aren't like fancy mice at all.

I got mine from a man who breeds them. I have previously got them from other people or from Houten.

This week the boys moved into their backelor pad in the garden viv. They loved the cat grass which has all been dug up!

The first litter had 5 boys who moved with Bracken, and one girl who is in with mum and her six babies.

One of the older boys:

One of the babies (10 days old and eyes open already):

Now the boys are in their own viv, this should mean there are no more litters (presuming none arrive in the next 21 days after taking the boys out).
