Default My African grey (Congo) parrots

I have a breeding pair of parrots. Joe (female) was a rescue. She was kept in a very small cage with a swing and a bell. She was returned to the breeder as she was aggressive and noisy.

I adopted her and she had a big cage upgrade. She learnt to trust me and other people again.

She learnt commands/tricks and also talking in multiply languages, parrot, human, dog, duck, chicken and lots of wild birds. Lol

She can make ringing phone, emergency services sirens, car alarms and other noises. She now wolf whistles due to my neighbour.

She lived indoors until she decided she wanted a mate and now lives with Jake and 1 of the babies.

They have had seven babies 2 are 4years old (rehomed), 2 are 3 years old and 1 is 2 years old (the other two were reformed).

African greys are highly intelligent so need a lot of stimulation/enrichment/toys.

As they live a long time. They will be in included in my will, so they are cared for by someone I know or a sanctuary.

Check out info videos of "Alex" in the USA to see how much they can learn.

I love African grays! They used to be a bucket list pet for me, but now that I've gotten older, they'd outlive me and I just couldn't imagine that Looking forward to learning all about yours

CMB, I ABSOLUTELY love African greys! I am so glad that your furry friends have a special thread. Parrots are so amazing! Aren't they just the greatest?!? I am so glad that Joe was rescued by you and she learned to trust people again. How lucky you both are to have each other. I love it that Joe and Jake have found one another, too. I am so thrilled that they had 7 chicks (although now fully grown) together; it must have been truly wonderful for you to experience it all. Wow, it must be so much fun to hear them speak all of those "languages" and make numerous sounds!

I had a sun conure parrot named Aragorn (from The Lord of the Rings), and he was definitely one of the absolute loves of my life. He learned to say "Luv ya!", threw his tiny ball into the miniature basketball hoop 2 feet away while dancing to Space Jam in the background, loved solving all sorts of puzzles (including unlocking a 6-digit padlock), and doing numerous aerial tricks on command. I never clipped his flight wings because he was fully trained and never had the desire to fly away from his home with me. He also would fly to my arm whenever I called to him. He was truly a loving and loyal pet who literally saved my life twice. I will forever be grateful that he came into my life and gave me so much joy. I will love him forever. I will never forget my feathery family member, and he will always have a very special place in my heart.

CMB, thank you for creating such a lovely thread. I will enjoy seeing pics and reading about their adventures with you and each other. I love the pic of your feathery friend. Which one is it of? What are the names of all of the other African greys staying with you?

Very interesting information! I didn't know that they could be so smart!

It's very thoughtful of you to put them in your will. I also didn't know that they could live for so long

That's so great you've included them in your will. I think Winston Churchill's parrot outlived him by a very long time. Before the thread was moved, I had asked more about them as I don't know much about parrot species - I had heard from someone that there are some "non-allergenic" parrots - is that true?! Seems unlikely come to think of it. They all have feathers!

It's the feather dust that varies (this causes allergies in some people) between parrots. I haven't heard of non allergic parrots, but if you search the internet there is bound to be info out there on which species are less dusty.

I had to hand feed one of the chicks (before they learnt to look after them properly). Three had hatched and two had died. The youngest was 5 days old. I fed it every two hours day and night. It died after 14 days unfortunately.

I have another person ask if they could have a young (about 12 weeks old) baby parrot if they breed again.

If anyone has questions please ask.

I think individuals would have to actually test themselves with different parrot species and see which do or don't trigger allergic reactions.Everyone reacts differently when it comes to allergies, especially with dermatitis/eczema related reactions, and this is impossible to predict(even testing is not too reliable,so again trial and error is what must be done).

Of course, keeping in mind what does and does not cause an allergic reaction helps.Animal fur/hair doesn't trigger a reaction, while the saliva that gets on the fur or hair does, and the same would most likely apply to parrots.Again,it would be impossible to know if an individual is actually allergic though without thorough testing with various species and not that done through blood tests and such as these aren't too reliable.

Thank you CMB and Amity. I did test allergic to feathers (not sure if that's all feathers) as a child and seem to be allergic to most animals. Except hamsters! Which was a lovely surprise.

It must be so interesting having a talking breeding pair! And nice that you helped them learn how to look after the chicks, despite the first "litter" not surviving. (Is there such thing as a litter of parrots lol, or is it another term?)

How long did it take you to teach them all their imitations?

I love these types of birds, what a wonderful life they have with you CMB and I'm glad you've included them in your will. I would do the same.
Reading about them talking and doing imitations and tricks brought a huge smile to my face.

A "litter" of parrots would typically be referred to as a clutch or a brood
