Question gerbils cage

Thinking of maybe adding gerbils to my furry family and was wondering if anyone know whats the best cage to use/ if an ikea detolf can be used for them?

A detolf would be okay size-wise, but it would be a bit shallow when it comes to holding bedding. Gerbils should have a bare minimum of 10 inches of bedding, but 12+ is really optimum. I personally love 40 gallon tall tanks for them as it gives them ample room, and also allows for tons of bedding! What country are you in, this will help in recommending cages

Here is one of my favorite wooden style cages, though do be cautious as gerbs are notorious little chewers
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01MFF...RyL&ref=plSrch
It holds lots of bedding and is huge, though a bit pricey

Of course, there's also the simple 20 gallon tank, but one half of it should be completely filled with bedding.

Other than the cage I linked above, most aren't suitable. Cages with bars are almost always chewed and this is even more detrimental to gerbils than it is hamsters. As a guideline when looking at a cage for gerbils follow this list:

-over 360 sq in
-avoid bars
-no plastic
-can hold min 10 in of bedding (factor in an 8 inch wheel on top of this)

As long as the cage fits these guidelines, you'll be just fine

No problem! If you ever have any other questions- even if they're just regarding the general care of gerbils (as I have begun to run my own gerbilry, I love these little guys) please do not hesitate to ask

Good advice already on tank size/depth, but I would also advise to steer clear of bars for gerbils for the simple reason one of mine chewed the bars on a play pen when he was out playing and yanked backwards, loosening a tooth. It was hell afterwards taking him to my vets every month to have this jagged tooth trimmed and his diet no longer sustained him as he couldn`t eat normal mix and gradually lost weight and I had to watch that. It really was a terrible time trying to manage his eating and I just want to tell anyone looking into gerbil habitats to try and stay away from any bars unless the tank has a tall vaulted roof where they can`t reach them to chew.

A large glass or Perspex tank is your safest bet. I kept a pair of boys in a 30" inch long (76cm) glass aquarium and they were fine in that. x
