Could they live next to each other with a grid in between so that they can see and communicate with each other?

The guinea pig forum has a lot of great information and may be worth looking at. Good luck

From what I've heard two male guinea pigs can fight at times and do need separating but ideally will need to live in close proximity to another guinea pig.

You can find the guinea pig forum that FlowerFairy mentions here: The Guinea Pig Forum

They might be able to give you some ideas on how you can keep them both.

I would look at keeping them in a split environment where they can still see/smell one another without being able to attack. No need to rehome one if you can do this. Are they brothers or were they put together from different backgrounds?

Those CC style cages seem to be a good solution, although they are only grids s you may need a few inch gap between each enclosure to prevent any nips through the square sections.

I`ve had to split cage mice in the past (two wire cages sat side by side) before introducing female mice and it works very, very well. It allows the animals to feel safe in their own space with the cage bars between them. You are dealing though with two male boars and the best people to ask are guinea pig people who have good experience with this type of issue. Let us know how you get on.
