Several months later,I'm finally able to give a decent update!I can definitely say that the puppy is going to be a different breed than expected.

For a long time I had ideas that could work for dog breeds, but weren't necessarily the most practical or suitable at least as far as what is going to work now.At this moment in time a shih tzu is what I'm most likely getting!

Hopefully I'll even get lucky enough to not have an insane chewer this time around, but I think that's just something I'll need to evaluate over time(with heavy supervision of course).

Oh a shih tzu puppy sounds lovely, congrats amity! Hoping for your sake that your puppy isn't going to be too big of a chewer, I know mine is. Make sure to share pictures whenever you do get him/her

Thank you I'll be getting some fairly durable toys to be safe as well.I don't think the puppy should be any worse than my current dog(I'd be surprised,he has ridiculous jaw strength that makes him more like a mini pitbull than a terrier mix but supposedly it's typical of JRT's and JRT mixes to have strong jaws and chew heavily).Puppy pictures will definitely come when I get him(definitely male, female would be risky at best although in the very far future it could be possible).

Worst case scenario there are loads of Kong toys and many other durable toys on the market.I don't think it would be a good idea to use antlers with the puppy until his adult teeth come in,but that is definitely something I'll use eventually especially if he happens to be a heavy chewer.

How exciting! Look forward to update when you get your pup! I would love to see pics of your current dog too

I'll try and get some up to date pictures of him at some point, preferably once he's not so irritated(severe allergies unfortunately, but they're nowhere near as bad as they had been previously!).Of course, that requires getting him to stay still and not run around which is easier than taking hamster pictures but still no easy task! It's like he has an off switch but it's sort of broken

Oh no, poor little guy Alfie suffers with food & seasonal environmental allergies too so I know what a nightmare they can be! Hope he's feeling better soon x

I think the irritation just needs a little extra help at this point with some safe moisturizers and such.It was terrifying at first, but fortunately it's a manageable nightmare!A good diet has definitely done the majority of the work, but between that and extra necessary things he should heal perfectly

Luckily for me his favorite dry food is technically a puppy food(he's weird about kibble size). He's really not picky with wet food however, nor has he ever completely rejected wet food, although a lamb based wet food did take two tries until he would eat it.I do need to experiment more with his food though, but hopefully I'll be able to get him onto a more completely rotational diet rather than just rotational wet food.

I might attempt making some frozen dog treats at some point though, especially since it should be getting hotter here next month!

Diet is key in managing Alfie's allergies too, it really makes the world of difference. I've made Alfie frozen treats before out of natural yoghurt, mashed banana and blueberries - they went down well!

I've been meaning to post an update on the situation for a while now,but it never quite goes to plan!

In the theme of things that don't go to plan,I can definitely say that there won't be a shih tzu any time soon. That doesn't mean there won't be a puppy however, just that sometimes plans may change if things fall into place in a different way than expected Essentially,I'm still planning on getting a puppy however one detail has changed and that's the breed of said future puppy who is now to be a pug!
