Okay thank you again for the advice, would this cage be better? With the bar spacing? Savic Zeno 3 Empire | Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!

Rats love to have TONS of toys in their cages, their cage should be filled with many hammocks, chains, baskets, and shelves. As amity said, avoid cotton because it's harmful for just about every small animal due to the fact that it can wrap on limbs, teeth, and can harm their digestive systems. As many toys as you can possibly find work well, pet igloos, sea grass huts, and wooden and cardboard boxes also work really well. Amazon has lots of good toys if you could possibly order some off of there

If you don't mind the access not being as good as some cages,it would work nicely for a good sized group of rats once set up well Of course, you could still make it an oversized cage for a smaller group than what would fit according to minimums which would be better!

Ratty Corner Cage Calculator

The cage calculator does help a lot with rat cages,as long as you keep in mind that it isn't bad to give above and beyond the minimum if you take full advantage of the space you have.

I am not thinking of getting the rats anytime soon like in about a month or so, I'm thinking of getting the cage next week and then start getting the supplies and building up the cage so it is to a suitable standard. Want to make sure I'm prepared before I get them, I'm really stumped on what cage to get as the one I was thinking of getting wouldn't be suitable for young rats and I can't spend over £150 on a cage and I don't have the space for a savic royal suite (I wish I did!) in my room

It says I should be able to fit 10 rats in that cage, I'm only thinking of getting 2 or 3 maybe 4 that would be my limit, my main goal at the moment is to find a suitable and big enough cage and then start getting toys because I need to get the cage before I start to properly lay it out and see what I can fit into it.

Odd numbers generally work better.Preferably a group of five, but that's due to the potential issues with having a trio and then risking both rats teaming up to harass the other rat and if they needed separating because of that you'd end up with a single rat for some period of time which is never good and should be avoided at all costs.

Honestly I would love to get 5 but I feel like my dad wouldn't allow it, he knows they need to be in pairs (at least) as they are very sociable animals and need companionship technically he cannot stop me but we'll see what happens. I don't even know where I'll be getting them from yet, hopefully this garden centre that I know takes very good care of their animals, but I don't know how I would feel getting rats from pets at home. I have been looking for breeders and there doesn't seem to be any in my area so I know those are my options.

A pair will probably be your best bet then It doesn't hurt to get a big enough cage for larger groups in advance though, since you could potentially reuse it over and over for different groups of rats over time instead of having to buy all different cages depending on the size of a group!

By the way you can turn grape vine into bird or rat perches/climbing branches if you have access to even the most basic of drills and the right stainless steel hardware. It isn't difficult either, and can be much better to get branches that you really enjoy rather than being quite as limited with just the premade bird perches. It works with any sort of safe branch, although grape vine is definitely a good example!

Thank you for that, I'll definitely look into that. I know that I do want male rats as I tend to get on with them better, when I was younger we had a group of 3 boys and two had sadly reached their time they died a month between each other and our other male was neutered as he had a tumour on his testicles so we decided to rescue 3 females and they bonded pretty well, however the girls didn't seem to like me lol

You could still get that second cage you linked (the one with the big spacing) if you got full grown male ratties. They wouldn't be able to fit through those bars. I think that might be your best bet!
