Re: My new guinea pigs
Gorgeous new additions ff. They are very lucky piggies with their new home but then I think you are lucky to have some piggies too! Love them.

Just wanted to add, there is an excellent guinea pig dental specialist in Northampton who treats guinea pigs from all over the UK, Oreo included, so there are some good vets, but far too few.
Peter Gurney was part of an organisation called the CCT, which advises to not use vets and instead self medicate and self treat through their 'Rodentoligists' which aren't qualified vets and so illegally prescribe medication.. They are quite controversial and I have heard that they have a bad relationship with the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons). I heard from a well-known dental sanctuary (for piggies) that they quite often end up sorting out piggies who were given incorrect treatment from the CCT, some of whom didn't survive.
I have a book by Peter Gurney but I do disagree with some of the information. I believe qualified, experienced vets are still important parts of medical treatment as they can go down hill so rapidly. Unfortunately that happened with my sweet Toffee, who I have now lost as a result .

I believe Peter Gurney was part of the CCT (Cambridgeshire Cavy Trust) which is where you may have heard of him. Some vets will advise PTS when it's not necessary. Just after I lost Toffee, Oreo got very ill (gut stasis and bloat) and my local vets offered to PTS. I declined and clearly made the right decision as he is now thriving and about to be bonded with a new piggie .

Re: My new guinea pigs
Also, I don't know why I didn't add on here, but the fluffy additions are so adorable! I love the fleece liner! Can't wait to pignap them

Re: My new guinea pigs
Thanks for adding that information chesca_27. Gives flowerfairy more ideas on what`s out there in terms of looking at all avenues. Peter may have got disillusioned by conventional vet treatments after dealing with them and finding that they were being negligent with the guinea pigs he had or sounded alternatives by researching. I would still at his books and methods are safe and `tried & tested` but of course, that`s for the individual to decide upon. I do agree that a good vet is always your first priority.

Re: My new guinea pigs
It never hurts to have a variety of opinions and do as much research as possible Just as you can't entirely trust all vets, you can't entirely trust any single person.I have believed and always will believe that the moment you hold someone in such a high regard that you seemingly take every little thing they say as gospel it has gone too far.Nobody is perfect, and even the best people have made mistakes!

Re: My new guinea pigs
Thanks Coco. They have been popcorning in their cage (x). I do like laptime cos I get to see and stroke them. Still waiting for them to be properly relaxed about that!
Chesca thanks for the cct and vet info. Our local vet seems to be really good. Woodstock was pts there and they were knowledgeable and helpful about his cushings disease.
I will defo. research Peter Gurney. I agree racinghamster. He may well have got fed up with the lack of knowledge at some vet practices (the rescue felt the same).
Amityville. I love doing research and agree that it is good to have plenty of different opinions.
Mistletoe and Jingle had a weigh in today. Jingle was particularly unimpressed and tried to launch herself off the scales. I held her and waited for her heart to slow down before weighing her properly. Mistletoe was fine. They are much happier just hiding and sitting rock still during lap time!

Aww such beauties, so love the long hair. So great you've rescued them and they now have a forever home.

Re: My new guinea pigs
I'm not surprised you keep gazing at them, I'd be exactly the same.

I like those pics especially the last one where Mistletoe looks like she is 1/2 hiding
