Oreo - the other love of my life

Oreo has a new companion - Pemba! We adopted him just under six weeks ago, so I am late in updating you. They are very sweet together. I really can't be bothered to upload photos (I am feeling lazy), so if you guys don't mind, I will just link his introduction thread on The Guinea Pig Forum . Pemba's intro and Oreo photos .

Both are a ill at the moment unfortunately . Nothing major, just common illnesses. Beforehand, they were doing amazingly and Oreo's teeth are nearly sorted. We have found an exotic specialist (Jasper's breeder's vet) in a nearby town (10 min drive) who is able to do conscious dentistry in guinea pigs and has lots of experience with it. Any major problem will still go to the dental specialist in Northampton though.

Oreo has got slightly crusty eyes and a runny nose (URI), so we have antibiotics (Septrin) for that. Pemba has some kind of bladder infection (I can't remember the name because there are so many types) but he's had blood in his wee so he's on Baytril and Metacam. Fingers crossed they get well soon.

Pemba is such a lovely looking little guy, congrats on him! I'm sorry to hear they're both ill, but you take excellent care of them so I'm sure they'll get well soon keep us updated on how they're doing!

Both are off medication now, but Pemba will need an X-ray at some point in the next week to rule out bladder stones. Oreo still has a sniffly nose, but he is slightly better. I will be monitoring him because he is quite old now.

Debating on which vet to take Pemba to. I trust my exotic vet far more, but we originally took him to our local vet for the antibiotics. It's not as simple as just taking him to the exotics because I voluntee at the local vet for my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. I see those vets regularly and they will ask me why I haven't brought Pemba back in.

The head nurse there hates me enough and once shouted at me because she heard I took Oreo to a dental expert in Northampton to perform a procedure that they couldn't, after multiple opportunities. That's why I have to be careful now about which vet I take him to. The head nurse is also in charge of my volunteering and has threatened to say that I don't actually volunteer there, so I would have to redo six months of volunteering, putting my award at risk. She also told me I'd be a terrible vet (my dream job) because I care about Oreo too much. She's a lovely person (sarcasm). Oh and finally, when Oreo was originally very ill, she told me she didn't want to see Oreo at the vet for two weeks, despite how ill he was.

Pemba should be 2 in May-June and Oreo will be 6 in late May-early June. We celebrated Oreo and Toffee's birthday on May 31st.

Oh my goodness! This is so upsetting! Hang in there, chesca! I hope Pemba will be okay, and the vet that you take him too will be compassionate and gentle with him. X-rays can be scary, but I know that you are an amazing owner and will take care of them. My fingers are crossed that everything will go smoothly with no complications.

Oreo has had an X-ray before so I'm not too worried. They were able to do it without anaesthetic because he has a tendency to not move when he is unsure of his surroundings. I don't know how Pemba would deal with it, but thankfully he is a lot younger so he would be relatively low risk in any procedure.

Oh chesca that's horrible! I wouldn't take your little ones back to that vet, there's no excuse for them to treat a paying customer with such disrespect! A good vet should never yell at a client for taking an animal somewhere that has their best interests in mind, and that breaks the vet's code of ethics. I wouldn't let her discourage you, if you're passionate about it, then you're fully capable of becoming a vet! Sorry that something as simple as getting Pemba an x-ray has turned into a fiasco. I hope all sorts out, keep us all updated on how Oreo and Pemba are progressing

That vet sounds awful, her behaviour is out of order and the same goes for the head nurse. This is bullying, maybe start writing everything down, dating it too. Write your feelings also. Should anything happen, you have it written down. Some people shouldn't be vets
