Default My 4 New Mice!

So I went to a petstore sometime in the begining of August to get two little hams as my dwarf, Cloud, passed. We recieved Salt and Pepper, two hybrid dwarves at that store. While there, I saw many other pets, including an abundance of feeder mice, maybe 20 in one cage.

As most of my US peers here know, Pet stores like petsmart and petco usually don't have good conditions for their pets. At this time, I really just wanted my hams, but I admired the mice.

Now, I felt like I was ready for another adition to my pet family. I wanted to get mice, but not any fancy kinds. I wanted to 'rescue' (I know this is controversial as if you get a pet from a store, they get money to replace it) some feeder mice , and give them as shot at life. We got a large Billy Bookself Cage, connected two of them, built the table and got everything ready. On Thursday, I built the lid, and asked my sister to drive to the store, and pick up 3 female feeder mice, as I had a speech I had to give.

I get home at 5, and I am told there are 3 -adorable- mice. I check, and I see all three. So I go down to my father and tell him thanks, yadayadayada, and he tells me "what are their names?"

There was a large one, a small one and a medium sized one, so I named the Winter (small), Dawn (medium) and Yore (the big). Yore loved running on the wheel I set up!

He then asks "What about the 4th one?"

.......

I am obviously surprised and shake it off, but I get confirmation, there was one burrowing. There were --4-- mice. I am shocked, but ecstatic at the same time. I changed their names a bit, as there are now two identical mice with the same medium size. The small one is still Winter, but the medium ones are now Yore and Dawn. I named the large one Runner, as she was on her wheel for a very long time.

I just uploaded a cage tour on youtube

I am so happy they are part of my family now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygnBXQKbuRM

Congratulations on your adorable new mice branberry. White mice are magical don`t you know?!! My first ever mouse was a white red eyed male and I have been a mouse lover for years. I don`t have any now but would keep them again in a heartbeat. I will watch your YouTube cage tour when I get a chance. The wheels will be enjoyed, that`s for sure!

Mice love millet (seed and sprays) sold for caged birds as a treat and food-wise, rat mix is a good start as rats and mice eat pretty much the same. They love variety and small seeds. Are your mice all sexed as female? Female mice get along well and do prefer company. Males not so much as they tend to need separating when they mature and their territorial hormones kick in.

Paper based substrate and nesting are safest as mice can be prone to respiratory problems, so anything dusty needs to be avoided. x

Edited to add: Wow, what a lovely home they have! Well done you! The silent spinner will be used the most as it`s easier for the mice to turn, so it might be a good idea to remove the other wheel and replace it with another spinner? They are nice looking, healthy mice too.

I'd definitely recommend getting Reggie Rat/Mimi Mouse food It is available from Petco in the US and it is the best US option for mice,as a lot of foods have unhealthy things in them or are really high in protein. For pet shop mice as you may or may not already know, too high of protein can be an issue!

Thanks! Just wondering, should aspen be avoided then? Is carefresh a better option?

Some people will use aspen, but I personally would avoid it because it isn't usually as comfy as paper substrate though even with paper you can get somewhat hard pieces though that isn't as bad as a sharp piece of wood which could cause serious damage to tiny eyes and such.

I would aim for Kaytee Clean and Cozy as Carefresh is extremely dusty.Clean and Cozy is a lot cheaper too, especially if you can get it from an alternative online retailer like Chewy.Drs Foster and Smith might have it cheaper too,and there are tons of really nice individual fruits, seeds, and nuts which can be very good for those with lots of small pets, birds, and some exotic pets as well from there

Congratulations on your new additions - your 4 mice are absolutely adorable. These are such lucky mice to be giving such a loving home - also they have very sweet names. Their cage layout looks really nice and it looks like they are really enjoying their silent spinner.

I`m not familiar with aspen but I know it`s one of the `safer` wood-based options in the US. Although I would tend to try the paper based substrates or wait to see how the mice react to the aspen. You could add in some paper based bedding and not actually change things too much. Spot cleaning is a better way than tipping the whole lot out since like hamsters, mice like to retain some of their original scent. They do urinate more than hamsters and mice urine does smell more, so it`s just a matter of keeping on top of it really.

I used a product called `Cosi n Dri` made my Carefresh here in the UK and would highly recommend it for mice. Carefresh can be very dusty, but like everything else on the market, it`s all about finding one that isn`t going to cause the mice to sneeze or itch. Always air out any substrate a good week before using it in an open storage bin and give it a good shake around outside to release any fine cadis or particles. If you can hold a handful up to your nose and breathe it in without sneezing or smelling a strong scent, then it`s okay.

I thought Cosi n Dri was discontinued? I used to use before I couldn't get it anymore and it was very dusty for me. Used to make my URI-prone guinea pig sneeze so much. I was also slightly allergic. Thankfully, I now use Fitch.

As for the mice, THEY ARE FREAKING ADORABLE . I don't know anything about mice, except they are very cute, especially yours .

You could be right about the Cosi n Dri being discontinued chesca because the supplier I bought it from said they has problems finding it at the warehouse, although they said the stock was high at the time, she did mention that it could be a discontinued item. I really liked it, but Fitch and the other paper alternatives would be good too. x
