Default Gerbil cages

What do you guys think are the best cages to keep gerbils in?

I've heard that glass tanks don't have enough ventilation and they can chew on the silicon sealer. But commercial habitrail like cages are so small and allow the gerbil to make a mess.

Please let me know what you think.

I would go with a 20 gallon tank with a tank topper on it. Gerbils must have around 7-10 inches of bedding to burrow in, and other styles of cages just aren't suitable for this much bedding. Ammonia build up isn't too much of an issue with gerbs as it is with larger rodents such as hamsters, and not nearly as bad as with rats and chins (which consequently cannot be kept in tanks). Sometimes just a plain 20 gallon with half the tank filled to the top with bedding, and blocked off with a bendy bridge, and the other side with only 4/5 inches of bedding to hold food bowls, wheels, and such can work well and is the set up I use for my gerbils.

The largest glass tank you can give them to be honest. I kept two gerbils at any one time in a 30" inch long aquarium with a mesh lid (no tank topper) as they tend to chew the bars and injure their teeth. I would never put gerbils near bars for this reason. It`s not worth risking injury. I`ve been there and it`s not good. Anything smaller could prove restricting once you put their next box in it of a wooden platform etc...

I`ve seen gerbils being kept in small tanks and thy really do appreciate space. As Drago said, they love to dig and are burrowing animals. I call them mini-meerkats!

Males tolerate one another better than females, but two females can live together if they are related. I always kept males and had four gerbils split into pairs because of a big de-clan. I wouldn`t keep more than two together because of the de-clanning risk.
