Default Any ideas?

We have a cat named Patches. He is about 12 or 13 years old now so getting an old man. I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything like this with a cat? Obviously we will be getting him to a vet - he has an appointment on Tuesday unless he gets worse - so I'm only really asking for advice and reassurance that he's gonna be ok ...

So a couple of days ago we went to pick him up and he cried loudly. He seemed in pain when we touched his back. Today I was watching him walk. It appears that there may be something wrong with one of his back legs. He's not putting much weight on it at all, and is holding it at a bit of an angle. All this is making him hobble. It took him almost 10 minutes to get down the stairs this afternoon! I'm not medically trained but to me his ankle area on that foot is sticking out a lot more than on the other foot. When he lies down he lays the leg in a weird angle.
There are many other cats in this area, as well as foxes and badgers who we regularly see in the garden. At first we thought it may just be that he had arthritis or something due to his age, especially as he can no longer jump on the furniture. But after seeing the way he walks today I am thinking he has either hurt himself (possibly sprained or dislocated something?) or he's been in a fight with either another cat or a fox. His fur on that part of the foot is looking orangey-brown instead of white which makes me think it was bleeding at some point which he's now cleaned.
When we did his flea treatment the other day instead of being calm whilst he was held, he was complaining and trying to scratch and bite us.
At best he needs pain killers. That much is obvious. What isn't obvious to us is what the vet may say or do as we've never ever had this with any cat before. All our cats have lived to around 16-18 years old, so he is quite old. I had thought that being old he could have hurt himself whilst outside but it really does seem more than that ... I will try to photograph his two back legs to show you later, to show what I mean.
Has anyone ever had anything like this and know what it might be? Also, is he likely to be given just pain relief or put to sleep? We don't want him put to sleep but would if the vet suggested it I feel quite bad because the other day I was making dinner and didn't know he was behind me so I accidentally stepped on his tail! Well, I had assumed it was his tail, but now I'm wondering if it was his leg as he's holding it at an odd angle and am wondering whether or not I hurt him accidentally.
Yesterday and today he's spent the day sleeping on the stairs. He's not allowed in the house at night, except for the room where the washing machine and back door is as that is where the cat flap is, so I assume he slept in there all night rather than going out as he hasn't really seemed like he wanted to go out. He's also really off his food, but I don't actually know if this is linked because recently he has been being sick before any of his food is digested - we see the whole biscuits. I keep being told that he "eats too fast" and that it's not really sick, just kind of like when a baby drinks milk too quickly and gets the spit-up after. Although I don't know if this is true or not (and I intend to ask the vet!) he's not my cat so there's not a lot I can do. I would prefer him to eat cat meat as he's quite old and I think he may actually be having trouble chewing the hard biscuits.
I think for me I feel bad for accidentally stepping on him. I probably should've known he would be there as he is ALWAYS in the kitchen when someone is making food! But I didn't see or hear him and stepped on him. Although it was by accident I am concerned that maybe I was the one who hurt him?

I'm afraid I don't know much about cats, but it does sound like a vet visit would be in order. I am sure they would only suggest having her pts if she was seriously suffering and otherwise might be able to diagnose and treat her, or give her something to help her appetite or give her some comfort. It does sound like a great age for a cat. Meanwhile give her a stroke and say sorry for stepping on her - I'm sure she'll understand.

I doubt they would suggest putting her to sleep. They can fix broken legs of cats and even if they can't be fixed they could amputate the leg. One of my sisters cats had it's leg amputated and it was a lively as ever after it got used to having 3 legs.

Well this evening he didnt eat and cried every time he walked so we called again and took him to the vet. They are keeping him in over the weekend on some IV antibiotics incase it's an infection. They had to sedate him slightly so they could take a look at him cos he was unaturally vicious, which isn't surprising if he is in pain. On Monday they will review his case again, and decide whether or not to xray the leg. For now it's being treated as a possible infection. They would have xrayed him today except the xray person doesn't work saturdays and we'd have to take him to a different town, as as he was already upset they felt it best he stayed there. I'd have loved him to have come back with us tonight and given him the meds, but they are gonna keep him sedated so they can administer it via IV as well as a fluid drip. He will also get a full check up on Monday, or when he's discharged as the vet here usually does that for free too when pets have had to be kept in. Because he is an older cat surgery would only be done if it was absolutely necessary. They have already phoned twice in the last 2 hours to let us know he has been settled for the night and there will always be someone with him in the night. So he's getting a little pampering too bless him. Before we left him there he looked at me and (this sounds silly!) I really believe he was telling me that he forgave me for stepping on him and that it wasn't my fault. Although the vet is shut for practise on a sunday people are allowed to visit their pets so as long as he is feeling up for it we will pop down to see him tomorrow. Apparently there's only him and 2 dogs in there tonight so he'll definitely get lots of TLC! I'll keep you updated though

So I got in about an hour ago after a long day of appointments and food shopping, to find the cat sleeping at the top of the stairs!! Didn't know he was coming back today! He's not allowed outside yet until he is fully better - which he is going to hate! - and is on some oral meds at the moment. He is still limping a little, but not as much. He is on some antibiotics and pain killers. The vet said they think he had a cut or insect bite that got infected, but they don't know for sure as they couldn't find anything other reason why his leg and back hurt him. However once the course of antibiotics is finished he has to go back for a check up, and they will do some more tests. He HATES taking meds, and the vet said originially they tried crushing the tablets and putting it in his food, but he refused to eat it! He has been told (sternly by the vet!) that he MUST eat his food lol. They wouldn't discharge him until he was eating normally and since I've been back he's eaten his food and is asking for more which must be a good sign! However we have been told to feed him little and often, as they believe he eats too much too quickly which is causing him to be sick. So we have to split his daily food into tiny portions and feed him every couple of hours, and through the night he is allowed a little more to get him through the night - but as he is usually shut in the room where the washing machine is at night it won't matter too much if he is sick as that room has tiles instead of carpet! Though for now he will be sleeping in the kitchen as the room where he usually sleeps at night has the back door and his cat flap which hes not allowed to use at the moment. Anyway, it was lovely getting to the top of the stairs and seeing him all stretched out asleep. Wanted to get a pic but seem to have lost my camera's memory card!
