They is probably a turtle forum you could try looking one up.

Do you mean a turtle that lives on land and water or actually a tortoise, which lives on land and can't swim. I had tortoises before so could advise on tortoise care.

My friend says he is a painted turtle, but I don't think he is from looking at pictures.

I've asked to join 2 groups on FaceBook and one turtle forum, but I haven't been accepted into any yet. On 2/3 I can at least view the content (but I can't post until I'm accepted), so I've been reading up a bit... but I would really love to be able to ask questions, you know?

ETA: He can definitely swim though.

Seems to me it is a turtle and not a tortoise. I know they can carry salmonella. They need good filteration of their water/swimming pool as it can get really smelly.

There are turtle pellets you can buy, but most eat meat.

If you have a female of breeding age it is important that they can have somewhere to lay eggs (moist sand/soil) because they can retain their eggs which can make them I'll.

I think he is a red eared slider from looking at pictures.
He is older than we are, according to my friend, but I don't know how old the turtle is exactly. My friend says it is a boy.

The poor guy is living in a little tank with a few inches of water, and practically nothing else. He does have a filtration system though.

I'm aware that they can carry salmonella and this is honestly what has me worried most. If he is so old though, is it likely that he is infectious? (what I mean by that is, I don't think he has made anyone sick yet!) Granted, I don't think he is really handled much to have the chance to spread it if he does carry it >.>

They need about 1/3 land 2/3 water. I'm not sure if they all carry salmonella. Hopefully it is fully grown. Some species grow really large.

Turtles can bite hard and are not handled much, more of a pet to watch.

Have a look online for turtle tanks/cages. There are some plastic ones that have a deep end for swimming, a slope leading out of the water and a flat area for basking.

The only thing I know about them is people go on voluntary turtle conservation work in Costa Rica - so googling Turtle conservation/turtle watching in Costa Rica might give some species specific info.

Also The Tortoise Table website...if you Google it you should find it or if you go on the play store they have an app. They have quite comprehensive lists of suitable food for torts and turtles.

Turtles need HUGE tanks and excellent filtration, I don't know too much about them but they can be tons of work. YouTube channels that focus on herps in general will usually have good information. Reptile forums are great places to go for turtles, and have lots of good information and dedicated, experienced owners that can help answer any of your questions.
