Default Dog w parvo help!!!

we woke up this morning to our little puppy Rizzo sick and she was refusing to eat /: and we didn't know what was wrong until about an hour ago when we noticed her bottom was bloody. she also threw up a little bit of what seemed like gushy saliva. right now we have her isolated from our other dogs in our home in a box lined with a puppy pad and an old sweater. every 30 mins were either giving her Gatorade or some dog electrolytes we brought from the pet shop. I REALLY can't afford to take her to the vet so please try to understand. I've also gave her some amoxicillin suspension we had from last time she got bit by something, isnt it basically antibiotics too? I read somewhere that I shouldn't give amoxicillin, is that true? And do you know of any other things that i can possibly do to help her get better? one of our dogs caught parvo last year and we helped him out of it, so im trying to keep a positive mindset. thanks for any help!

Sorry this has happened but the only advice I would feel comfortable giving is finding a way to get your dog to a vet. There is no home remedy to be found on a hamster forum or anywhere else that can compensate for going without vet care. Especially for something as deadly and contagious as parvo.

i ended up borrowing money from my mom and finding a cheap vet nearby who offered a home caring package. The Vet gave her a shot of vitamins to keep her skin moisturized. Then he fed her some more vitamins through a syringe. We ended up getting some antibiotics to fight any infections that might pop up since her immune system is low right now. Also, every 8 hrs pepto bismol to help with diarrhea. We're gunna keep administering the dog electrolytes around the clock too.

But I feel like she's gunna pull though! I surely haven't given up yet so wish us luck!

Sorry to post on here, I think i posted in the "other pets" thread. But I'm not sure. I wouldn't really know where else to ask for help except here

If she doesn't perk up with what the vet has done with re-hydrating your pup then try rubbing a small amount of raw honey on the roof of her mouth and letting her lick it off on her own. The main thing is to keep her hydrated as that is what weakens them most with the very liquid stools, and them vomiting so much. If she refuses to eat anything then sorry to say you'll need to return her to the vet for some IV fluids to help her body keep going and fighting the Virus. Has any of your dogs had Vaccinations for Parvo?

I ask that last because Vets have confirmed Parvo is airborn which means no matter how far away you keep the sick pup chances are very high the other dogs have already been exposed to the virus. However the one who had it last year has immunity for life IF this is the exact same strain of Parvo. Parvo has mutated often in the USA sadly.

For Hamster content Parvo in dogs is a very close relative to Wet Tail in Hamsters both attack the digestive tract destroying the Gut flora and making it impossible for the animals body to absorb needed nutrition and Moisture and will if not tended to cause the complete break down of the digestion system causing a slow and very painful death.

Parvo is an incredibly destructive disease and if that really is what your pup has then it needs round the clock care. It destroys the lining of the gut and is very quickly irreversible. The dog needs fluids and constant monitoring by a vet. This is a disease that isn't very often successfully cured even with round the clock vet care.

Did you not have the puppy vaccinated?

A dog that has contacted parvo needs to see a vet. If your other dog got caught it too, this gives me the impression that neither were vaccinated. Now I know different people will have varying opinions on the subject, but a vaccination wouldve avoided this altogether.

Parvo does need to be treated by a vet though, like already mentioned. It's an unfortunate reality, but not a whole lot of dogs come around from this and if they do, they're often left with health implications as a result. Please please leave her in with a vet - a decent vet will allow you to pay in installments when you have the money. Also, completely bleach your house - parvo is HIGHLY contagious and can often be a pain to get rid of. If your other dogs aren't vaccinated, get them done.

Also, I know you probably don't want to hear this, but I do have to bring it up - In future, if you know that you can't afford vet bills, it's irresponsible to go ahead and get the animal anyway. Depriving an animal of vet care when they need it is a form of neglect and you can be fined for it. I know you've already brought her to a vet, but she needs to stay with one to receive treatment in order for her to have really any chance of pulling through.

I'm so sorry you have to through this, sending positive vibes your way~

I'm sorry your dog has Parvo

I'm going to say the exact same thing as everyone else i'm afraid-you need to take him to a vet. Without vet care the chance of her survival is pretty much nil.
When you have an animal, its relying on you completely. It can't do anything for itself, its relying on you to give it love, attention and care. If you can't afford vet bills, you shouldn't have got a dog, i'm sorry but thats the reality of it. Dogs are expensive animals to have and vet bills are costly. I understand that things happen and when you'd normally have been able to afford it, you no longer can't, but you need to plan ahead.

I strongly suggest phoning the vet and asking if you can pay the costs in small chunks. Some vets will accept this, but others do not. In future I suggest setting up a vet fund. So open up an account and put some money in there each week or month. That way when the time comes that your animals are in need of vet care, you have some money saved away.

Sadly out little baby passed away last night around midnight, we tried CPR and we couldn't get her to come back.

We did take her to the vet, for anyone asking. I couldn't afford it at this time because we had just dipped into our vet savings for a huge bug bite she had a few weeks ago. So because of the bug bite she was on antibiotics and we couldn't give her the parvo shots. My other dogs have had their parvo shots as they are all fully grown. dog care is very expensive in california. Hospitalizing her would have cost us around $2,000.

Bleach is the only thing that kills the parvo virus right? my dogs are inside dogs but I dont want them to catch anything just in case. do i still have to worry about that since theyre vaccinated?

Bleach literally everything, you can't be too careful. Vaccinated older dogs can still contract it, vaccinations don't make it impossible just less likely. Also try and think where the pup might have picked up the virus so you know if your other dogs have been exposed.

Sorry about your pup but without intensive vet care including IV fluids and sometimes even blood transfusions survival rates aren't good.

I'm not gonna say this person has taken on and animal and unable to tend to it or not, But I must say a vaccination does NOT I repeat NOT prevent Parvo it only ASSIST the dog or animal(Even humans) from dying from whatever it has been vaccinated with.

Case in point and call up the Vet if you want confirmation on this happening to me.
I used to show dogs, and I used to raise dogs. It has only been 4 years since I gave my last two show Cardigan Welsh Corgwyn away to a friend who shows and breeds them this very day. Back in the 1990s I raised and showed in Obedience German Shepherd Dogs. Back then they insisted on a Pup having it's first Parvo shot at just 3 weeks old at the Vets and a shot ever two weeks there after until the pup was 4 months old. I had a litter of seven beautiful HEALTHY pups. They were Vaccinated at the Vets using the Vets recommended schedule for each Vaccination. They all went in for their THIRD vaccination for Parvo at 7 weeks and would have been leaving for their new homes at 9 weeks old which is when they have had the booster shot for the other common vaccines.(in the states they don't do Rabies until 4-6 months old depending on the State you live in). As par the advice of the Vet they suggested I do one last worming before the pups went to their new homes so I was to come in the Vets and pick up the worming medicine. Now mind you no pups had to go just me. I walked in the Lobby and there was two young children trying to hold two very rowdy and untrained Shepherd Mix pups of maybe 16 weeks old. No parent was seen and the pups both pulled away from the child and ran up to me and jumped on me and of course licked me all over my hands.

A young woman came out of the examining room area with tears in her eyes and went over to the children after getting the pups under control and I figured that she had said good bye to and old dog so I said I'm sorry you lost your old dog. That was when she said oh it wasn't and old dog it was the Mother of these two pups. She then instructed the children to go back and say bye to the Momma dog cause there was nothing the Vet could do for her. I then asked what happen to the Mom? and she told me to my horrors that she had gotten Parvo and she was beyond help.

I was at that point running through my head what exactly I was going to do when I got home as those two pups were given a Parvo shot to assure they had immunities up to fight off the Parvo, and they had licked me all over my arms and hands. I got my worm meds and voiced my opinions on the Vet allowing possible positive pups to run willy nilly in the waiting room Lobby where all clients bring their dogs for various things but the damage was done.

The Vet told me to go home and remove my shoes, and take a shower before going anywhere near my Vaccinated 3 times now pups to assure they didn't get the Virus. So I went home and took off my shoes outside the door and went directly into the bathroom took off my clothes and showered just as the vet had said to do. The one thing they didn't say was to immediately wash the clothes I was wearing so I put my clothes back on and went about worming the 3X Vaccinated for Parvo pups. 14 days later I was in tears as I had to phone every person who had already choosen their pup as one by one the pups got sick from Parvo.

I had no way to pay $3,000 dollar a DAY to hospitalize the whole litter and to find a Vet willing to allow you to bring in parvo ill pups was a nightmare. Even the Vet which caused this to happen refused to allow them in to their facility. I finely found one Vet to allow me to bring in the whole litter where it was determined 2 of the 6 remaining pups were too far gone to even make it through the night, and were helped to the bridge. This kind emergency Vet took the time to teach me how to give ringers lactate every 4 hours to the remaining 4 pups but the weakest and most dehydrated pup(in just 24 hours mind you) they couldn't insert an IV Needle into his leg so I had to learn how to properly do a Subq Fluid Hump on his back so his body could absorb the much needed liquids that would keep his frail little body going. You all can scold this member on how they can't afford the puppy cause they can't afford the Outrageous prices of US Vets but you really don't know the pain your causing cause you haven't had to watch a puppy you did everything right Vaccinations wise and they still die from this awful Virus. I had to watch 7 happy jumping around pups turn into skeletons and crying out in extreme pain for 4 days. I had to wake up to wonder which puppy would still be alive and fighting for their life and who would I find dead from losing the battle. Of 7 Healthy and fully Vaccinated for Parvo 3X I was only able to save ONE pup. One pup and they all had been Vaccinated 3X for Parvo by a licensed Vet. So now who wants to say this member did not vaccinate her puppy? Who wants to say because they don't have $3,000 dollars a DAY to keep their puppy in the Vets that they are abusing their dog?

Folks the Vet care in the USA is NOT like yours over seas, and even in Canada. The Vets here are out to gain a profit off every appointment made. I commend Nickoh for wanting to try their best to save their pup and I pray that she will recover.

Also we have a new Mutation Parvo Virus which we have NO Vaccine for which started at the Greyhound racing tracks in New York and quickly spread about the USA via retired racing hounds who harbored this Virus in their bodies after recovering from it and being placed in Greyhound rescues all over the USA. Vets have been scrambling to find a Vaccine for it but so far all they have managed is to find a way to boost the already present Parvo antibodies so the Dog MIGHT be able to fight and over come this new super Parvo virus.

So lets all calm down and support this member and not give them even more grief then they already are dealing with.

Nickoh I hope your still reading this thread and can forgive all for jumping to conclusions on your pup's and your situation. I pray also that the Lord above will heal your pup and she can grow to be a fine dog. BTW what breed is she?
