I'm not sure what the author of the article at that link is trying to say, but I'm guessing it was written by someone in Europe. I've never heard anyone recommend "10 gallons for the first goldfish" but then pet stores on this side of the pond are still spouting the "inch per gallon" nonsense and selling bowls with goldfish! The author is at least clear that goldies are active fish that can grow large, though 8" is not the maximum size.

So, while everyone may have a different idea of size per fish, there is a minimum that must be met in order to meet the needs of the fish just in terms of its waste output. Remember, fish have to live in their own excrement! I'd want my toilet cleaned out if I had to live in it

Vicki_S: what kind of goldfish do you have in a 6 gallon Fluval?!

So what is stunting? Is it bad to keep seven fish in one ten gallon tank?

Big boys a common goldfish have a small shubkin and a black comet I think he is the common is goin n summer as its to cold to let him out now and it's a 90 litre tank I think it's a fluval 6 it's a really old filter as old as the common fish so I don't actually know what it is and I no I'd rather have a mansion than a flat but I just think that maybe I know everyone is tryin to do good by the fish but me being a sensitive person reading some comments seem a bit harsh I'm sure they not meant that way

My father is a a little bit of a fish expert from having them all his life and competing in fish shows etc. I havent read the other comments so pardon me if this has already been said. The tank is too small for 7 goldfish, so they will be unhappy and maybe its being picked on from the others (being the little one), you need to get them a bigger tank, they will be more comfortable that way. Sorry if i sound harsh or big headed, it just panics me when people dont have big enough tanks, like people that put a fish in a bowl for example..pet hate!

Oh, whew, I thought a Fluval 6 was a 6 gallon tank! But 90 litres (24 gallons) is slightly more reasonable

As for being harsh, I'm not trying to be, it's just facts. Fish can be deformed and lead pain-filled, shortened lives by being kept in too-small tanks. Not to mention being poisoned or burned by their own wastes.

To bring it back to hamsters, if someone came on here and said they loved their hamster but only had room for a shoebox that couldn't fit a proper wheel, it's likely the members here would recommend rehoming it for its own well-being.
