In such a small tank she's going to need to do daily water changes along with running an extra-large filter to keep on top of their waste output.
I'm not very good when it comes to the species of goldfish. Is "commons" a type of gold fish? I don't really know what kind they are.

That is an unfortunate myth that has held on in spite of all evidence to the contrary. The truth is that they continue to grow, but their body deforms in order to fit.

Did you read the article I linked?

Honestly, that tank is way too small. The article BrainGirl listed is great, I'd recommend reading through it. The sore could have pooped up because of the cramped conditions and large amounts of ammonia in the water. I would highly suggest that you upgrade your tank. It may sound crazy, but common goldfish can grow up to a foot long and need at least 30 gallons of space PER FISH. I have a goldfish of my own (he lives in a 33 gallon aquarium with an extremely strong filtration system) and he has never had a single health problem. Goldfish are active fish and really enjoy open space to swim freely. I hope I don't upset you with this post, I just want to inform you with some goldfish care.

Thanks Wanna_Hamster! I'm so glad that knowledge has increased and thanks to the internet, is becoming more widely available. Both fish and hamsters have benefited by it, but as we've all seen, tiny cages and bowls continue to be sold to unwary new owners

Here is an interesting bit about them with mention of a record holder! How to Promote Goldfish Growth Rate ? Puregoldfish.com

There's also a channel on YouTube all about goldfish called Solid Gold that's fun to watch

LOL! I watch it because I don't have room for the size tank I'd need for Goldies. I keep them vicariously

Hi Scargirl, I do hope you understand that BG and Wanna are not attempting to bad mouth you as must likely you were not informed of the vast care needed to house Goldfish in a proper environment. The thing I see is right now your ill goldfish needs attention now to assist it in getting over this sore on it's back. Sadly to do this will mean removing him, and placing him in a much larger tank then you currently have. I'm sure you didn't intentionally try to harm your fish but now you need to do what is best for the fish.

Is there any way to get a larger tank? I know a 40 gallon will not be large enough still for 7 Goldfish but surely it is better then 7 in a 10 gallon. Perhaps you can re-home a few so they can have less of a crowd?

As it is the waste from so many in such a small tank is what is causing your one to gain sores. I do hope you can find a way to keep your fish but also help them have a better environment. Just as you would buy a larger cage for your Hamster you need to be sure your helping and not harming your Goldfish too Good luck and do keep us updated on any progress.

Oh geez, yeah, thanks Nancy's_Hamsters! I would never want anyone to think I was attacking them over something like this! I save my anger for the pet shops and pet supply manufacturers for continuing to make, sell and promote unsuitable housing.

Hang in there! II would ask around and check your local classifieds for cheap or free tanks. In fact, there are even cheap ways to house fish in the same vein as bin cages. I've got a disabled Betta in a bin right now that has the footprint of a 40 gallon breeder but much shallower.

Agreed with everything so far but without a picture of the sore its difficult to judge. However in a small tank ammonia is going to be an issue and can cause 'burn' like skin problems with the fish. Would be interested to see what the test results would be. Could also be caused by a parasite in which case you want to keep the fish as stress free as possible.
I work in a Sea Life (otherwise I wouldn't be piping up) and we test everything at least once a week and even a small ammonia spike can impact the fish and usually means performing a large scale water change.
Hopefully its something simple to sort out

Theirs a wee link I found that everyone has a different idea of size per fish so technically no one is right or wrong just depends on preference stunting is when the fishes outer body stops growing to fit into their surroundings as a smaller fish will last longer than a big one however their internal organs do not so can cause internal bleeding

https://goldfishgazette.wordpress.co...goldfish-need/

Just because your wee fish as a red sore does not mean that he is internally bleeding bacterial infections and fungal can come up in red sores on the fish do you use a dechlornator? In my tank mines overstocked so I have a small fluval 6 I think it is and an ehiem 200 aerator running to help with oxygen my seven year old is massive he's goin next summer to a pond
