Default More fish questions

Thanks to this forum, we have successfully cycled Marvin's tank. I bought an API test kit and have been monitoring water condition and doing partial water changes. The past week or so I've noticed this rust colored film covering the plant and some of his decor. It wipes/rinses right off. Any idea what is causing it? There are also a few small spots on the acrylic tank. I just tested water today and is as follows: pH 7.6, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20. Thanks for any feedback!

It's likely either algae or diatoms. Probably diatoms. Newly cycled tanks tend to get that. It's not harmful and will eventually go away

I think it is diatoms, after looking up some photos. Should I replace the plant and decoration that are most effected? Or will it clear on its own?

It'll go away on its own. Just keep up with the water changes and once your cycle is established things should settle down

Enh98: if it makes you feel any better I've been trying to cycle 3 new tanks. I used borrowed media which normally makes for an instant cycle but for some reason I'm having trouble with one of them. Diatoms everywhere!

*you can see some of water testing supplies through the tank. My numbers were out of whack but as they normalize my diatoms are disappearing!

I thought of Fishy and Marvin today while scoping out a brand new pet store which opened just 10 minutes by bicycle from me. Seems it is a smaller Mom and Pop turned mini chain store by opening up a 2nd store from their main store.

No small animals and no fish except for the most amazing Betta display tanks I have ever seen. Though still way too small for a forever home each compartment was a mini like 1/2 gallon(maybe a bit BIGGER) square unit with a aeration unit in each fishes compartment. About a 1 inch space was between each fish so they didn't have to flare and defend their tank at all. AND each compartment sat on a warming plate which kept the little tanks at a proper temperature. I never saw Happy Bettas until today at a pet store. Every fish was swimming about had full color none were glued to the bottom of their container like you always see in cup contained Bettas. The water was clear, and filtered by a whole unit filteration system, and the most amazing part was they only charge $3.99 per Betta wither they are Crown Tail, Double tail ect. After seeing the huge difference in their Bettas I wish this type display tank was made mandatory in every pet store in the USA. They still weren't perfect but the Manager was very willing to listen to the fact Betta Fish are not a bowl fish and how important it is to have proper water for them and heated tanks and aeration. Right now they don't carry any suitable tanks for them but she is going to go home and print out this information and show the owner to see if they would be willing to start carrying at least 5 gallon tanks for their Bettas. They also offered me a place on their Bulletin board to advertise my Hamsters as well as took my name and number if any customer comes in looking for Hamsters. I would then have the best of both worlds as the store customer would contact me for a sale and I would be able to regulate what the new owner must have as far as cage size, food, and wheel size etc.

Thanks Wanna_Hamster! I'm hoping my tank gets over its cycling problem soon so my plants can get on with the business of growing. It isn't my most attractive setup right now

That display sounds amazing Nancy! I'd love to see that kind of treatment of Betta Fish made mandatory as well. Sounds like a nice store
