Just out of curiosity, where did you get Marvin and Fishy?

Congrats on Marvin! I was afraid to look at this thread for a while because I thought it was going to announce the end of Fishy.

Fishy came from Petsmart and Marvin came from Petco!

That's funny!! Fishy managed to pull through but he is permanently disabled, I believe. 😀

PetSmart... I think I know why Fishy had some problems.

I used to get all of my fish (including my Bettas) from PetSmart and almost all of them have had at least a minor problem. The Bettas come in with huge shipments where they are put in tiny bags with about a cup of dirty water and placed into the little containers and sold. Technically, a Betta can live in those conditions, but still... Maybe your PetSmart is better.

But, it isn't all PetSmart; Bettas are not the hardiest fish in the world and have been bred do much a 100% healthy Betta is mildly hard to get! I now get my fish from a local pet store with very healthy and well treated fish.

Actually, a betta can survive in those conditions in the short term, but they won't do well to stay there. I once tested the water in a new betta's cup and I got a reading of 8.0ppm! That's deadly! Luckily bettas are able to breathe air to some extent, but they wouldn't survive that long-term. I complained to the pet store and they did start doing water changes more often but since then I see that the betta cups have gone back to being filthy

I know, it's so sad! Those poor innocent Bettas! There aren't many places that treat Bettas humanely. It's so SAD!

I wish we had some more local "mom and pop" type pet shops in our area. I'd really like to give them my business!

Mom and Pop can be worse. Pet shops are a difficult proposition.

I just tested the water in Marvin's tank...pH 7.6, ammonia and nitrite 0 and nitrate 5.0...are these results okay?
