The tale of the rabbit
okay weird thread name i know but i didnt know what else to put. Basically one.of my close friends came to my house with a rabbit she and her friend had found on the street being harrassed by dogs, she very kindly stepped in and brought the rabbit, now temporarally named "Snowy" to me as she had mistook it for one of my current rabbits. Snowy is now in my living room in an old pen we don't use anymore. Snowy has all that he needs (hay, food, water, even a cereal box) as well as a tube to hide in. i'm really flustered at this situation tbh and was wondering if anyone here had any advice? and how long should we wait for his owners to step up once advertised as lost? would a week be enough? thanks

Re: The tale of the rabbit
Hiya. It`s possible that (a) the rabbit has escaped or (b) has been released by owners who can`t be bothered. If he`s in decent bodily shape and is eating okay (check the teeth) then advertising and asking around would be a good step. I`m sure he will happily chomp away and b happy in your safe environment until either the owner can be found, or perhaps contact the RSPCA? They take in stray and found pets that get picked up by the public so if you doubt that the owner will be found or will come forward and you can`t keep him/her, the RSPCA would be the other option.
Poor bun-bun being harassed by dogs. Thank goodness your friends were there at the time. x

Thanks for your reply, i was thinking maybe he's escaped (his paws are all muddy, outdoor rabbit maybe?). My parents will be advertising on FB later to see if anyone.owns up and me and a friend are going to knock on some people's doors near wjere he was found to see if anyone round that area knows anything (of course we'll need solid proof they're the owners or we wont be giving the rabbit.to them). He's friendly, coming to the pen bars for nose rubs, doesn't seem.freaked about having his body stroked either. He's not overly skinny either, i haven't had chance to check his teeth and/ or gender yet as i wanted him to settle down abit. He seems calm, flopping down and just laying/lazying around in the pen/hay. I've seen him eat some of the hay and a bit of food. I'm not sire wjat'll happen if owners aren't found but as one of the rabbits we currently have here is actually my sisters and will be going back soon we may be able to give him a forever home if no one steps up

It's also worth notifying vets in the area that you have found him just in case an owner does report him missing.

That's a great idea, thanks for the suggestion. My brother in law suggested taking the rabbit somewhere (vets?) to be checked for a microchip, which to me sounds like a good idea.
Update on rabbit: he's still doing well, flopping contentedly, eating his hay and food. He really likes nose rubs and lays down fully when you stroke his back. His name has now changed to "Scruffy"

Re: The tale of the rabbit
He`s probably just happy to have a nice bed and food by the sound of things! Would be great if his owner came forward looking for him but I`m sure someone would love him if he has to be rehomed. Poor bun could have been living rough for a while? Or as you say, he may be an outdoor rabbit. Really hope he finds a home soon. x

Re: The tale of the rabbit
Just an update, the little fella is still here, no one has contacted us about him which is a shame really as he's so friendly. Also on further inspection he has a tiny notch outta his ear, not noticable unless you're looking really and a little cut/scab a bit below it which i cleaned with a saline solution. And finally pictures of the little one (Scruffy/Scruffs)

Re: The tale of the rabbit
He`s gorgeous! Lop ears and all white, how can someone lose him?!!! Are you thinking about keeping him? Obviously if nobody has come forward to claim him although it`s worthwhile to wait just in case. He`s either escaped or been dumped. Either way, he`s in safe hands now. x

Re: The tale of the rabbit
OMG! What a beautiful Lop-Eared Bunny. I rescued a bunny from the streets about 15 years ago. The people just didn't want it anymore and let it go on the city streets. I managed to get it to a bunny rescue. What's wrong with people? smh. My friend had a wonderful Lop-eared for years. Lovely pets.

Yes my mum said i can keep him if no one claims him, nothing set in stone yet just incase someone does claim him but the idea will be to make him a big pen in my brothers room, it might have to go upwards with multiple floors due to lack of space but the levels will be full levels with a ramp to get up and down

People can be so horrible sometimes, its sickening. At least the bun you found had a chance at a better life. I'm quite taken by Scruffs, he's so friendly comimg.to the bars for strokes and getting in the way when we try sweep his cage We've never had a lop-eared bun before (our rabbit is a Lionhead) so it'll be fun to experience what the breed is like
