Speaking of goldfish, I saw a three foot tank with accessories and two goldfish advertised in a local shop window yesterday for £50. Had I been in a situation where I could have them, I`d have snapped them up! I couldn`t handle a large tank let alone move it! x

One of the downsides to having a large tank is that they're so heavy, even before they're filled with water. The other is that there's a lot of water to go on to the floor if the tank develops a crack. It happened to us about five years ago, thankfully we were in to attend to it but if not then the carpet probably would have been ruined and the fish probably wouldn't have survived.

The fish had to live in a bin until we could get them a new tank but the silly things seemed happier in that than they seemed in their new tank for quite some time.

Patche went to his new home today. It seems strange to look over into that corner and not to see an aquarium there.

I got a message this morning to say that he seemed to settle in fine and was happily swimming around the pond.

That`s really good news that Patche is in a nice pond now. Sad all the same though that goldfish end up outgrowing their tanks. I looked into keeping fish in a small tank and even Mountain Minnows or other smaller cold water fish end up having babies and the tank would end up full of fry! And bettas are tropical fish so I went off that idea too. My fish keeping dreams went down the pan after that! x

As much as I think tropical fish would be nice, I think I'd be paranoid that we'd get a power cut and they'd all die because they'd got too cold.

That`s my fear too Fluff. I would be running about frantically trying to find a heat source to keep the tank water warm enough! If I would keep small fish in a cold water tank with no heater and just a filter running, I would be happier coping, but I just feel fish keeping is just too hands-on these days even with goldfish. I did consider fresh water snails, but then I don`t want to deal with eggs being produced and all the husbandry that seems to go with anything kept in a water tank! x
