Thanks robo fan, er... Unneutered males definetly smell more than females but some people get used to the smell really quickly (others don't). We avoid full cage cleans for every animal we own without good reason and avoiding full cage cleans seems to pretty much stop everything scenting too frantically. We mostly spot clean with everything but we do tend to do partial cage cleans more often for the mice, the nests seem to need it a bit more often but then our big group is 20 strong - of course their nests need cleaning more often given that the most hams we have in a single cage is 2. We've found what substrate and nesting material we use with the mice does make a big difference in how much they smell. Unneutered males scent far more than other mice - Peanut and Nuthatch tend to cover a lot of their things with urine (but Nuthatch is worse for it than Peanut for some reason) whereas the neutered males and females don't do that as much.
Mice don't tend to bite, from everything I've heard they only bite if really, really stressed or scared. I've had a few nips from curious mice but I'd be surprised if any of ours bit and drew blood - and ours vary from brilliantly tame through to pretty skittish and nervous about being picked up.
I'm a member over on
Categories - Mice Are Nice! and would strongly reccomend asking over there to get better answers to all your questions - a lot of their members know a heck of a lot more than I do
Skeever - Don't worry, the cages aren't anywhere near plugs so as long as we avoid escapes we'll be fine...
