Saline is just salt water so I'd boil some water, add some salt, let it cool a bit then use it to clean the eye. I hope it helps

Thanks hopeful hamster. I did think about it being a URI, but as this isn't a full time noise, I'm wondering at something else. If I see it getting at all worse though, it will be an immediate trip to the vet.

Is the forum you are talking about called Wheekers? If so, I've already tried them when I first got guinea pigs, it was not a positive experience to say the least. I was called terrible names and was swore at by several members. I much prefer the experience of hamster central. Thank you though. Technically AJ was in the adoption center. He was marked down to a mere fifth of the price of the healthy ones, another reason I noticed him as different from the others.

Just wanted to mention pucca isn't a white guinea, he is white and black. I made it sound confusing. Sorry about that I will go see which forum you are talking about, be right back!
Yep, I wasn't saying Pucca is a lethal white, but lethal whites tend to have teeth problems and so any threads on them might have so tips of how they feed them hay.

The forum is guineapigcages.com, not Wheekers. No one will call you names or anything. They only care about the well-being of the piggies.

I checked it out, I think I'll join, its the best guinea forum I've ever found! Thank you rh! I'm about to use it just as soon as I finish puccas hourly feeding

That makes sense about the lethal whites. I thought that was a hamster only problem! I guess I have a lot to learn and I look forward to it unfortunately I think his tooth problems are a result of bad genetics and his previous owners gave hay only as a treat. What else is a hay rack for? (* sarcasm *)

I thought the same thing about hamsters. :P I didn't know they also had a 'lethal white' issue too.

Wow. One of mine never saw hay, as far as I know, and the other never had any other vegetables besides carrots...and he had waaay too many at a time; probably 5 baby carrots in one sitting. -_-

(I'm ZipBonBoo on that forum, by the way. )

Another forum that might be able to help is guinealynx.com. They have medical advice links or you can post a question outright.

Lightbulb Re: I went to Petco....

I would try to switch to another bedding or fleece (fleece might be better if you potty train first). Pine can cause respiratory problems because it tends to be a bit dustier than other beddings. I personally like carefresh and aspen but some people think aspen is a little pokey for some animals, and since he doesn't seem too well right now i would try something soft. Maybe try wiping the eye and if it doesn't get better, just drop by at the vet and see what they recommend. Guineapigs are prone to getting eye infections, and some even have to be put down because of them

Hope this helps and your little piggy gets better!

Thanks Sarah. We gave him the first eye wipeing with the saline, he didn't protest much. It is looking a bit better now. I will continue it as often as possible and if that doesn't clear it up, I'll phone our vet. I just have to wait to switch him over to fleece for a few more hours because our entire bundle is being cleaned right now. I've actually discovered he usually only does it when I pick him up, when one of the other boys starts wheeking, or when my dogs bark. Its more kind of whuff/snort, I've heard my big boys do it once or twice. Maybe its a sign of stress or anger? Either way, I'll be switching him over soon.

Another step on the list of firsts! He chuttered at me! To say I'm chuffed is an understatement! I started laughing because he was giving me this look as he did it like "stop it!" Its so different raising a baby, I've never done it as my boys were all over one year at the least when I got them.

Have you ever seen SkinnyPigs1's channel on YouTube? If not I highly recommend you check it out! Very useful and she covers a lot that I didnt really know about Guinea Pigs! I dont think I can get one though again, I developed bad sinus allergies at my last piggy I owned and I dont know if that was because of the pig or because of stress.

But I recommend Skinny's YouTube Channel most definately!

Thanks Thrifty Hamster, I'll go check it out. Youtube is great

We did the second saline eye wipe a few minutes ago, and was suprised to see there wasn't much goop, just some crusties, looks like its helping already! I also gave him some leftover critical care from puccas extra stuff and he loved it! He also hasnt eaten or drank much since we brought him home, I hope he learns soon but until then we will be syringing him some.
