I've never kept chipmunks, but I wanted one at one point and looked into it. However I gave up on getting one because generally from what I've read/ learnt:
Their not handleable, the best you might get is to touch it through the mesh of the cage while its climbing if your lucky
Their a squirrel, they can give you a very hard and very nasty bite
Their not tame, not been pets long enough, their still very much wild
You'll be very unlikely to catch it, they are lightening fast, my dad's friend had one, took him hours to catch it if he needed to
They need huge, vast spaces to run around in, as their naturally designed for swinging through the forests of Canada, so no cage is really ever going to suffice
They only really make 'good' pets if you get two or more, put them in huge enclosure and generally leave them alone, not really much fun in that
They are exotic so would cost a fortune at the vet to treat
They live 5-7 years on average, and the thought of having a pet that I could never pet never mind hold, and would probably only barely tolerate me, for that length of time was the final nail in the coffin. I got a chinchilla instead, still not super cuddly, but more so than a chipmunk
