Smell???
Right, I have a male mouse who STINKS! Is it the same with hamsters? Like where the male scents? or do they not smell? Like my mouse only smells because he scents where as female mice do not, basically I want to know which is the better to get? Do either smell?

Re: Smell???
My male hamsters don't smell as far as scenting is concerned, even if I smell directly at his scent glands he doesn't smell, the only things that smell as far as a male hamster/females hamsters too plus their heat period is when they haven't been cleaned out properly/regularly as hamster wee has a very strong scent. If you litter train/find wet corner and keep that area clean then there should be no smelly problems with a male hamster. i haven't had mice before so can't comment.

Re: Smell???
Male mice do just generally stink. :L Female mice smell far stronger than hamsters, but the male mouse really does reek. No offence mousies. :L
Strong enough to say, that our pet shop doesn't sell male mice unless someone requests one for breeding, because they are so unpopular because of the smell.
Male hamsters really don't smell that strong. With hamsters, of the two genders female are the stinkier, because they are the more territorial and come into heat every four nights.
Unless you don't clean the cage regularly, a male hammie really doesn't smell that strong at all.

Re: Smell???
Male hamsters don't smell. Female mice smell a bit, worse than hamsters. Male mice absolutely reek. The smell is so strong, it will cling to your clothes and you can smell it wherever you walk about after. I used to have male mice, not joking, but after being near them I had to go and have a shower and change my clothes afterwards to get rid of the smell.

Re: Smell???
Yeah I've never had a female mouse only a male and Oh god he stinks! I clean him out and literally an hour later he smells (in his old tank) now he had more aeration in the new cage but still smells!
I was just wondering because I have both make and female gerbils and neither smell at all, so I was just thinking is this similar. Lucky you guys say males don't smell as much, I want a long haired male!

I'm thinking I might get the savic hamster heaven cage too! It looks like good value for what you get! You get a toilet a wheel and so much and its a decent size

Re: Smell???
Male mice scent pheromones in their urine as a warning to other males of their territory. It`s just something male mice do and yes, it does whiff! But their individual characters make up for it I feel. I kept males years ago when I started out with mice and then moved on to groups of females, but even the females have a strong scent, so smell is part of mouse keeping. It is something you get used to, but it can be a lingering ongoing smell that will stay in a room. Some people get used to it, some don`t. It never bothered me personally but then I don`t necessarily worry about it all that much. Hamsters smell way less, even though they can have their own pee smell! But that`s normally nothing compared to male mice!
I always think my little roborovski has a smell of salty feet!!!! But in a nice way.

Re: Smell???
Well, I am a relatively new owner of 4 female mice. They don't stink at all. Here's why. There is a product called "Good-Bye Odor" sold at Petco that you squirt into their water. It has enzymes that neutralize their urine. It is not harmful. My pets stay in the bedroom, and at first, my bf complained about the smell, until I got that stuff for their water. No more complaints!!
