The Ferplast Jenny cage is big and the Furet Plus is about the same size. You could keep 4 rats in there if they had out time too. I have kept 3 does in the Furet Plus (only have 2 just now as my old girl died recently). There's room for hammocks (which they love) toys, a wheel and a house in there.

If you really want to spoil them you could get the Furet Tower which is huge.

Are you planning on boys or girls? Personally I prefer females as I'm not keen on the boy's huge *equipment* which they drag along behind them LOL, they also have a stronger smell and need cleaning out more. Adult bucks get "buck grease" on their backs which makes their fur look scruffy.

Although bucks are quite a bit bigger they are lazier.

My girls do use a wheel, one of them is really keen on it and the other one goes in occasionally. The largest silent spinner is big and strong enough to take the weight of a rat.

You could try preloved as well as gumtree, people not infrequently offer rats for rehome quite cheap, often including a cage as well.

i would love to get them a tower so they would have lots of climbing too i think i would have them out everyday as long as the house is secure enough so they won't escape

And i was thinking males as in most animals the males seem to be most forgiving incase my son grabs them rough

And do they need a smaller cage at the start so that they can be tamed?

I don't think so, although I believe the Furet Tower can be partitioned off, so you could just use half while they were small (assuming you get babies)

Rats are pretty food oriented, I've never had any trouble taming mine with tasty bits of food

Nope rats are easiest to tame out of the cage anyway. With mine I just let them free range around and come investigate me when they wanted. rats are smart they soon learn to be tame if you offer food. Besides any good rat breeder will have hand tamed them before you get them.

The only reason you might have them in a smaller cage to start off with is because with some of the large cages the bar spacing can be a bit big for babies.

The tower cage is a great choice and rats really make amazing pets the only downside I can say from keeping them is how short their lifespan is, only 2-3 years. I got as attached to my boys as you would to a dog and loosing them was very hard. I don't want to dampen anyone from getting rats but it is something to be aware of.

Heres a video of my boys getting up to typical rattie stuff

Just a quickie,

It is well known on the forum about Amethyst's ratties..can I encourage as a first timer NOT to go fo rescues, I learnt the hard way

http://www.hamstercentral.com/commun...wins-guys.html

It was a very rewarding journey but a heartbreaking, stressful, tiring and painful one.

I currently have a mix of dumbos and top ears 5 boys in the hamberley cage from EFC. I personally like the Abode range of cages and the critter cages.

Regarding diet, avoid too many meats as too much protein can cause skin problems.

Be aware they are VERY prone to tumours and respiratory issues, you may wish to read up on myco

Id suggest joining fancyrats forum

Regarding taming, if you get from a breeder (again as opposed to gumtree etc) they pretty much come used to being handled if they are a decent breeder. males are generally lazier than males but I have one that is so fast you'd think he was a cheetah!!

Just keep on researching but i'd suggest joining the forum for your answers so the gorgeous hammies don't get overlooked on here xxx
